Gary Lineker, the host of Match of the Day, has joyously described Alan Hansen's discharge from the hospital as "the best news ever".

Former Liverpool and Scotland defender Hansen, also a long-time panellist on the BBC programme, was significantly unwell, resulting in his admission to the hospital in early June. He was released on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool issued the following statement: "Alan has been discharged from hospital today to continue his recovery at home.

"Alan, Janet, Adam, Lucy and family would like to thank everybody for their wonderful messages of love and support. It has been overwhelming and has helped enormously."

Just two weeks ago, a statement from the Reds stated that Hansen was "seriously ill". Thankfully, his condition is improving and he will now recover at home, reports the Mirror.

Expressing their gratitude, his family issued a statement thanking fans for their uplifting messages of support. In turn, Gary Lineker echoed their sentiment by sharing his own reaction on his social media platform.

Earlier this week, Graeme Souness shared an encouraging update on Hansen's health. Speaking to talkSPORT, the Liverpool and Scotland legend said: "I spoke to him and he sounded fabulous so I hope that's him on the way to a full recovery.

"He's definitely back because he did nothing but take the mickey out of me. He's been in a difficult place but the way he sounded, he's back, and I hope I'm right."

Gary Lineker also expressed his support for Hansen during a live TV broadcast last week. While presenting BBC's coverage of the Euro 2024 qualifier between Italy and Albania, Lineker took a moment to send a heartfelt message to his former Match of the Day colleague.

"We're thinking of you big man, we're with you and we're hoping and we're praying for you. We certainly are. Everyone at Match of the Day sends love and thoughts to Janet, Lucy and Adam and the grandchildren."

Drawing from Hansen's love for golf, Lineker added: "To use an analogy from Alan's favourite pastime golf... You might be three down with four to play, but if anyone can come back from it, it's Alan. I've never known a more competitive person in my life. We're all with you big Al."
