Chelsea found themselves in the firing line of Gary Neville during ITV's coverage of Spain vs Croatia at Euro 2024.

Neville has become synonymous with Sky Sports' coverage but also works for ITV during the international window.. He regularly shares the studio with the likes of Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Ian Wright, with the latter pair in his company on Saturday.

Guided by host Mark Pougatch, the conversation between the three drifted towards Spain's prospects in the current Euros. Despite having talented players like Rodri and Lamine Yamal and being previous winners in 2008 and 2012, the current iteration of the Spain squad have not really been talked up as potential contenders.

Neville also has reservations about Spain's chances, expressing concerns over Chelsea's Marc Cucurella featuring as left-back, a position he was assigned during their opening match against Croatia. Chelsea secured Cucurella's services from Brighton in a £60million deal in 2022, making him one of the first signings of the new Todd Boehly era at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United legend Neville clearly hasn't forgotten how much the Blues spent on the Spaniard as he made clear during his analysis of Spain's chances. "I didn't think he'd play," he admitted, adding:, "He's not been convincing at Chelsea, he's played a few games towards the end of the season. He's aggressive, he's tenacious, he's a busy little full back, that price tag still astounds every body, I think, still to this day.", reports the Mirror.

Neville continued: "The Spanish defence has a lot of experience now, obviously. But there's something just missing from Spain that makes you feel like they're going to go all the way, and I have to say him being at left-back is another example of why we think that."

Cucurella has had a tumultuous time at Stamford Bridge since making the switch from Brighton. He has made 59 appearances for Chelsea, with only 26 of those coming last season.

The defender is among several expensive recruits following Boehly's takeover that have yet to make a notable impact. Neville doesn't stand alone in questioning Cucurella's whopping transfer cost.

Former Chelsea player Frank Leboeuf admitted his confusion over the defender's enormous fee during an interview the previous year. "With all due respect to a man that I don't know, the player is not good enough for Chelsea," he remarked.

"It's as simple as that. It's crazy that they signed him for £60m or £70m, but we can see that he doesn't belong to this level."
