Germany 2-0 Austria LIVE! Popp, Magull goals - Women’s Euros quarter-final result, match stream latest updates

Germany vs Austria LIVE!

Eight-time winners Germany this evening take on neighbours Austria at the Brentford Community Stadium for a place in the semi-finals. At the last Euros, Die Nationalelf suffered a shock quarter-final exit having won the past six tournaments on the trot. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side remain England's biggest threat to the trophy.

So, Austria have it all to do, against a team who are yet to concede a goal after three group games. They themselves have seen their defence breached just once, but it is in attack where they have struggled, scoring just three times to Germany's nine.

But, as seen five years ago, Germany are susceptible to a shock elimination, and at this stage of the tournament, while Austria reached the semi-finals in 2017 in what was their debut on this stage, so have the pedigree. It’s an intriguing encounter and you can follow the quarter-final with Standard Sport below!

Germany vs Austria highlights

  • GOAL! Popp wraps it up!

  • GOAL! Magull against the run of play

Malik’s view

Amidst the euphoria at England reaching a fourth successive major tournament semi-final on Wednesday night, it is worth remembering that as recently as 2013 Germany were winning this competition for the sixth time in a row.

That run came to an end with a surprise quarter-final defeat to Denmark in the Netherlands five years ago, but the eight-time champions remain firmly on course for a shot at reclaiming their crown at Wembley ten days from now after a 2-0 victory over Austria.

Full-time!

21:54 , Alex Young

...and they don’t as Germany are into the semi-finals!

21:53 , Alex Young

93min: Germany wind down the clock with some substitutes. I doubt they will touch the ball.

GOAL!

21:49 , Alex Young

90min: Another risky move from Austria and this time they are punished as Popp blocks the goal kick back into the goal.

21:48 , Alex Young

88min: A last roll of the dice for Austria as veteran striker Lisa Makas replaces Nicole Billa.

Sitter!

21:42 , Alex Young

83min: Buhl just had to wrap it up! She had the goal gaping after Popp get in behind, but she sends her shot wide of the post.

21:40 , Alex Young

81min: Austria throw on Hobinger for Puntigam. A roll of the dice.

21:39 , Alex Young

78min: Approaching the final 10 minutes and Germany have started to get somewhat of a grip on the game again.

21:32 , Alex Young

72min: Austria are right in this game but are getting nervous and trying more high-risk options, and Germany can pick them off. Again they lose possession inside their final third but again Germany don’t make the most of it.

21:29 , Alex Young

66min: Half a chance for Popp as Austria goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger kicks the ball straight off her, but she cannot add to her tournament tally as she loses her balance.

POST!

21:20 , Alex Young

60min: Again! Austria hit the post as Puntigam is denied from just outside the area.

They cannot get any closer.

Malik chimes in

21:14 , Alex Young

“It was a poor kick from Zinsberger in the Austrian goal that led to Germany’s goal and her opposite number, Frohms, made a similar blunder there that went unpunished - just.

“A terrific effort from Dunst, who throws her hands up in frustration as the ball hits the woodwork. Can’t do much more.”

21:13 , Alex Young

53min: Some start to the second half, this. Dunst has just cracked the crossbar from Austria. So close.

21:10 , Alex Young

50min: Twice in the opening four minutes of this half Germany have worked it nicely down the left and pulled back into dangerous areas. Austria look much more open than in the first half.

21:06 , Alex Young

46min: Germany have hit the post after just 19 seconds! That would have been the end for Austria before they touched the ball.

We’re back under way.

HT thoughts

20:54 , Alex Young

Austria will be disappointed by going in behind but happy with their first-half display.

Magull's goal is the difference and Germany are yet to concede in the tournament.

Half-time!

20:49 , Alex Young

48min: That’s your lot for the opening half.

20:47 , Alex Young

45min: A bit of a miracle that it’s taken until the 45th minute to see our first booking in what has been a pretty spicy affair.

20:43 , Alex Young

40min: The pace has slightly dropped as we approach half-time. Germany taking their time in possession.

20:39 , Alex Young

35min: Austria aren’t taking this lying down. Hickelsberger-Fuller bursts into the area after fine work on the right, but fails to find a team-mate with the pass before being tackled.

Malik’s thoughts

20:32 , Alex Young

“Austria had been playing pretty well, more than holding their own, but that's a big blow.

“It's not really in their nature to chase games but they're going to have to now - they can't afford to just sit in and take this deep at 1-0 because a second German goal is curtains.”

GOAL!

20:28 , Alex Young

26min: Well, I jinxed that.

Pressure on the Austria goalkeeper sees Germany win the ball back in the final third and they storm forward. A simple cut back from Buhl on byline and Magull slots home.

20:26 , Alex Young

24min: Just over halfway through the first half and there’s no separating the teams, though Austria have had the better chances. A long way to go.

20:21 , Alex Young

19min: It’s getting a bit feisty with a few tackles flying in. Good game, this.

Off the post!

20:16 , Alex Young

14min: Malik wasn't kidding. Austria have just hit the post with a free header from a corner.

Germany know they are in a game, here.

Malik chimes in

20:14 , Alex Young

"Austria look bang up for this. Every time a player wins a 50/50 there are two or three teammates around her fist-pumping and cajoling."

20:13 , Alex Young

11min: Up the other end, Germany should probably open the scoring as Buhl is found by Popp inside the area, but the finished is rushed and over the bar.

20:11 , Alex Young

9min: Chance for Austria! A simple ball over the top releases Billa. A smart dink over the defender is superb but her finish is straight at the goalkeeper.

20:09 , Alex Young

5min: It’s all Germany in the opening stages, which is of no surprise. Austria standing firm so far as Germany win their second corner.

Kick-off

Here we go!

Here’s Malik

20:01 , Alex Young

“No tracksuit tops on for the National Anthems for Austria so they’re basically 1-0 up.

“Not the scorching conditions we’ve had over the last few weeks but a nice mild evening here.”

19:53 , Alex Young

The teams are in the tunnel. We’re moments away.

Plucky Austria

19:40 , Alex Young

Austria are the lowest-ranked side left in the finals, having progressed from Group A as runners-up to hosts England.

They made their tournament debut in 2017 and went all the way to the semi-finals, losing to Denmark on penalties.

Head coach Irene Fuhrmann labelled it a "sensation" that Austria are once again mixing it with the top nations in Europe as she prepares her team for a tough challenge.

"It's a sensation that we are among the top eight teams in Europe again," she said. "We have another chance to go up against one of the best teams in this tournament. Germany, like England, have proven how consistent they are. They haven't yet conceded a goal - it will be an incredible challenge.

"We're always very meticulous, both in the analysis of our opponent and of our own game. It's a match which we are really looking forward to, because it's new for us to play against Germany on such a big stage. I'm very excited to see what we will be able to do."

Geography of no concern

19:01 , Alex Young

Germany head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg insists facing neighbours Austria in the quarter-final of the Euro 2022 has no impact on the occasion.

Voss-Tecklenburg's side will no doubt be the favourites to progress nut while she has called on her players to show their courage against Austria, she stopped short of talking up the potential of the geography of the two nations impacting on the outcome.

"It makes no difference to us," she told reporters on the eve of the game. "We could be facing Norway, Sweden, Austria or the Netherlands, who are all neighbours of ours as well. It's a quarter-final at the Euro, and every opponent is deservedly here...it has no impact on us.

"We need to play our game. We can't be afraid of failure, instead we need the courage to win and to show our quality. We have a big chance to reach the semi-finals, which wasn't a given heading into this Euro."

Score prediction

18:27 , Alex Young

Germany have been impressive so far and I expect that to continue today.

Austria continue to punch above their weight but will likely eventually be overcome.

Germany to win 2-0.
