Germany take on Spain in one of the biggest early clashes of the tournament in Group E. The last time these two sides met in November 2020, Spain won a resounding 6-0 victory in the Nations League.

Germany will be keen to return to winning ways after suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Japan in their opener. They will be hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2018 World Cup, where they failed to advance beyond the group stages for the first time in history.

But it will be a tough ask, as they will face a Spain side high on confidence after their 7-0 demolishing of Costa Rica. Spain can expect a trickier match than their opener, where they completed more than 1,000 passes and had 81.8% possession.

In the build-up to the Germany game, Spain coach Luis Enrique elaborated, somewhat bizarrely, on his ban on players having orgies before games.

What date is the Germany vs Spain match?

The match between Germany and Spain takes place at 7pm UK time on Sunday, November 27. (This will be 10pm in Qatar and 2pm EST). It will be broadcast live on BBC 1.

Luis Enrique has told his Spain players they will get “hammered” if they dare to underestimate Germany.

“We are facing an opponent who we can’t be overconfident with or they will hammer us,” the Spain coach said. “They have won the World Cup four times - you look at their jersey and see four stars. If a team can respond, it’s Germany. The dynamic and their history are undeniable. We are convinced we can beat them and that’s our goal but have to give it our all. It’s a great challenge.

“We had a resounding victory against Costa Rica but we should not have too much confidence.”

Enrique is predicting a meeting of styles at the Al Bayt stadium on Sunday but says it is imperative Spain do not allow the match to become “open” and “crazy”.

“I think that Germany are a team that always plays on the attack,” he said. “I don’t know if they will be more dangerous now but, after their first result, they will play more on the attack but they always try to keep possession of the ball and are very similar to how our team play.

“We don’t want it to be an open, crazy match but our principles are very similar - we both try to dominate games.

“We need to control the ball comprehensively in the opponent’s half. If we manage to do that great but if not we will be hurt. If Germany control the ball we will have a challenging time.”

Enrique started with Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder, in central defence against Costa Rica but admitted he may start with a recognised centre-half, such as Paul Torres, alongside Aymeric Laporte in the Germany match.

“Yes I might make a different decision - Germany are a very good team and have so much mobility, if we can control that great, but I have to think about every element,” he said.

Spain forward Dani Olmo, who plays his club football in Germany for RB Leipzig, said they should underestimate Hansi Flick’s side at their peril.

“You can never rule them out regardless of that Japan defeat,” he said. “They are under pressure because they need to win but we know Germany are one of the best teams in the world and you can’t write them off after one game.”
