GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Charlestown wins 7th straight

Jan. 19—SALEM — Visiting Charlestown rallied to down Salem 42-28 in a Mid-Southern Conference clash Thursday night.

The Lions led 5-1 at the end of the first quarter and 10-9 at halftime before the Pirates outscored the hosts 19-7 in the third period and 14-11 in the final frame for their seventh win in a row.

Senior Maddie Nipper totaled 12 points to lead a balanced attack for Charlestown, which was playing its third game in three days. Additionally, Maddie Warnock netted nine while Lexi Finchum finished with eight for the Pirates.

"Great win after facing adversity on the road," Charlestown coach Scott Matthews said. "We completed three games in three days. I'm super-proud of this group. Sitting at 15-6, with our schedule, is good stuff!"

Sidney Burton tallied a game-high 22 points to lead the Lions (5-16, 2-5), who are scheduled to visit Mitchell at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Charlestown (15-6, 6-2) will travel to Seymour at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SEYMOUR — Elise Coleman tallied 23 points to lead four in double digits as Floyd Central rolled to a 79-58 win at Trinity Lutheran on Thursday night.

The Highlanders led 21-18 at the end of the first quarter and 41-34 at halftime before outscoring the Cougars 21-8 in the decisive third period.

Coleman had 10 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, and went 1-for-2 from the foul line.

Brinley Clark added 18, Samara Miller 13 and Nora Gibson 12 for Floyd.

The Highlanders (13-8) will visit Corydon Central at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

BLACKHAWKS BEAT WARRIORS

FRENCH LICK — Class A No. 7 Springs Valley topped Christian Academy 66-30 Thursday night.

The Blackhawks led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter, 35-14 at halftime and 49-24 through three periods en route to victory.

Leah Stevens scored a game-best 13 points for the Warriors while Brooklyn Shields added eight off the bench.

CAI (8-11) will next visit Cannelton at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
