Glam rock, the Osmonds, power cuts, Edward Heath and George Best - England when Huddersfield were last in the top flight

Huddersfield have ended a 45-year absence from English football’s top tier by beating Reading at Wembley in the Championship play-off.

They last played in a Division One containing Bobby Charlton, George Best, Bill Shankly, Brian Clough and many other legends.

Football was hugely different then and the Terriers finished bottom of the table after slipping into the bottom two of a 22-team division in February 1972.

Huddersfield won six times in 42 matches but incredibly they did beat both the champions and runners-up at Leeds Road, their then home.

Clough’s Derby County won the League but were despatched 2-1 as were bitter local rivals, Don Revie’s mighty Leeds United.

Leeds went on to win the FA Cup, while Stoke City beat Chelsea in the League Cup Final in a shock result, to qualify for the UEFA Cup.

Arsenal finished fifth but did not make Europe in those days when only the best teams were rewarded for League places. and only champions made the European Cup.

Jimmy Lawson was Huddersfield’s top scorer with nine league goals while 70s great Frank Worthington netted five times in what proved to be his final season with the club.

Trevor Cherry, who went on to join Leeds and play for England, was another regular in the team as was Yorkshire football stalwart Terry Dolan.

The Terriers have had their fair share of ups and downs since 1972, spending plenty of time in the bottom two divisions, but now they are back, ready to take on huge clubs like the Manchester giants, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool.

And Arsenal.

Dominating

Pop-tastically, Nilsson’s ‘Without You’ was the top selling single of the year with the likes of David Cassidy, T Rex, Donny Osmond and Don McLean also dominating the charts.

But it was the era of Glam rock with Sweet, Slade and Gary Glitter also ruling the roost.

On the BBC, John Craven’s Newsround made its debut, as did Are You Being Served? and Mastermind.

On ITV, Emmerdale Farm, Love Thy Neighbour and Rainbow were seen for the first time.

The Conservatives were in power, Edward Heath the Prime Minister as much of the country suffered power cuts as the miners held a seven-week strike.
