Glenn Hoddle exclusive: Clueless Arsenal fans have no right to call for Arsene Wenger's head

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has offered up a series of exclusive columns to Yahoo Sport ahead of the new Premier League season, and suggests Arsenal fans frustrated by the continued reign of manager Arsene Wenger are wrong to question the judgment of the Premier League’s senior tactician.

Glenn Hoddle exclusive: Clueless Arsenal fans have no right to call for Arsene Wenger's head

I am absolutely baffled by the abuse flowing in the direction of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and to all the critics who seem determined to criticise the manager I played under at Monaco I say this; be careful what you wish for.

After everything Arsene has done for that club, the criticism he has to put up with from a variety of sources is quite amazing in my view and I ask these people, who could come in and do a better job than Wenger tomorrow morning?

If there was an obvious replacement lined up to come in and take over as Arsenal manager, I would understand the desire for change, but this is a manager who won back-to-back FA Cups not so long ago and guided the club to a second place finish in the Premier League last season.

Okay, Leicester winning the title led many to conclude that Arsenal had blown their chance to end a long wait to get their hands on the biggest trophy in English football, but let’s have some perspective here.

There are aspects of Arsenal’s set-up that are frustrating, but we have seen what can happen to a massive club like Manchester United after a long-serving and highly successful manager walked away and left a power vacuum that has been tough to fill.

United have hardly thrived since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and we might see something similar at Arsenal when Wenger goes.

[EVERY PREMIER LEAGUE TRANSFER THIS SUMMER]

Sadly, football fans don’t really look at the long-term these days and as we will see again this season, three defeats in a row puts managers under pressure.

I didn’t have to deal with social media when I was managing in the Premier League or with England, but it is a new aspect in the mix now and helps to stir everything up to new levels. Twitter gives people a platform to express their views and the loudest people are often heard.

Despite all the doubts, I expect Arsenal to be in the mix for the Premier League title again this season and I would suggest they have as good a chance as anyone of winning the title.

We don’t know what is going to happen to the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea as they have new managers in charge and Arsenal’s stability under Wenger could be crucial to them pushing on and winning that Premier League title again.

One thing is for certain, Arsenal fans calling for Wenger to be replaced now may be changing their tune when he has gone in a few years time because that man has given more to their club than anyone ever will.
