Golfer sets a historic record in Brean club championship

A golfer has broken the Brean Golf Course record during the club's 2024 club championship.

The premier event saw Jez Clift smashing the long-standing course record with a remarkable round of 62, seven under par, and five shots better than the previous record.

Recently debuting for Somerset Seniors, Mr Clift posted seven birdies and had no dropped strokes.

His record round had two identical halves of 31 strokes each, leaving his competitors trailing behind.

This stellar performance allowed him to bag the premier club event for the first time.

Mr Clift's victory is thought to be the first time that the Championship has been won at Brean with a sub-par 36-hole total, with Clift finishing three under par.

The event, which is notorious for its dramatic finishes, saw Mr Clift birdie the 1st, 8th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes with sublime play.

He won by a remarkable 12 strokes, beating the runner-up Zak Jones, despite his formidable round of 75, garnering a usually highly competitive 147 total.

Reece McDermott came in third place with a total of 151.

In the Ladies event, Millie Jones was expected to bag three titles in a row, maintaining an eight-stroke advantage over Lyn Bird until they reached the last five holes.

Despite Ms Bird's relentless pressure and a birdie at the penultimate hole, Ms Jones managed an exceptional putt from the fringe on the final hole, securing her victory by two strokes, achieving her hat trick.

The two busy days of golf witnessed some record-breaking scores, with Brean scored in perfect condition and with favourable weather.

In the two-day event featuring record-breaking golf at Brean, both Barry Roe and Pete Barton tied on 132 in the nett event.

Roe's pair of 66's secured the trophy, overcoming Barton's returns of 62 and 70.

While the audience enjoyed the record-making, the Brean Seniors also delivered an impressive performance at home against their Tall Pines counterparts.

Tim Amy's men took home a resounding victory of 5.5 games to 0.5 and the occasion was musical and enjoyed by both sides.

In the next two days, Barry Brindley equalled his best score at Brean, securing the Senior's June Medal with a gross score of 86, leading to a superb nett score of 62.

He finished three clear of the rest of the field, with his nearest rival Jimmy Quigley returning a net of 65.
