Gossip: Liverpool 'make promise to Asensio', Man Utd 'quoted £443m for Kroos', Wilshere 'set for Turkey move'

Marco Asensio, Toni Kroos and Jack Wilshere have all been linked with big-money moves away from their respective clubs

Serious question: would you want your team to pay £158m for one player? If your team was in the Qatari league, possibly, and you knew the owners could afford it. Or maybe if you were a Leyton Orient fan, just because it would be funny.

But what about if your club purported to be a well-run, self-sustaining, successful business? Liverpool, for instance.

The Reds have reportedly offered this enormous sum for Real Madrid’s attacking midfielder Marco Asensio – a player Jurgen Klopp is “obsessed” with bringing to Anfield in the same way he is obsessed with laughing louder than is strictly necessary, according to Spanish TV station Telemadrid.

And today’s Express adds that Klopp is trying to tempt the 22-year-old to leave the Bernabeu by “promising” to make the young Spaniard “one of his talismans”.

It’s not clear exactly what this involves, but at the very least this status should earn Asensio more than the 19 league starts and three Champions League starts he mustered for Madrid last season.

Liverpool will also give Asensio a “significant pay rise” and the number 10 shirt vacated by Philippe Coutinho, whose £146m Barcelona price tag seems more reasonable by the day.

Real Madrid want top dollar for Toni Kroos

There is an old friend lurking in Spanish paper AS – it’s a story linking Manchester United with a move for Toni Kroos.

It’s quite similar to the previous 8,000 stories linking the Red Devils with a move for the Real Madrid midfielder, with the added nugget that the European champions will demand that United pay Kroos’ release clause of 500 million euros.

When they add that to the £158m they’re allegedly getting for Asensio, it could turn out to be quite a lucrative summer for Florentino Perez.

Another man permanently being linked with a move to the Premier League, the AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci, is being linked with a move to the Premier League again.

Manchester City and Chelsea have “joined the race” to sign the 31-year-old Italian, who is also wanted by Man Utd, reports Calciomercato.

Chelsea lead Alisson race

Chelsea are also said to have stolen a march on Liverpool and Real Madrid by making a £62m move for the Roma goalkeeper Alisson. The Mail says the Blues have matched the Serie A side’s valuation of the Brazilian and are “close” to signing him.

Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere’s search for a new club close to London has not gone well. The Star says the departing Arsenal midfielder has somehow ended up flying to Turkey, where he is due to sign for Fenerbahce on a free transfer on Monday.

Elsewhere, Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney is being lined up by Everton as a long-term successor to Leighton Baines (Mirror), Wolves are considering a move for Swansea’s £20m-rated centre-back Alfie Mawson (Mail) and Newcastle are interested in Andros Townsend but Crystal Palace are demanding £30m for the 26-year-old winger (Times). Which makes perfect sense because his career has gone from strength to strength since Newcastle sold him to Palace for £13m two years ago.
