It’s well known within the digital media industry that if you put Cristiano Ronaldo in your digital media product, thousands or even millions more people will click on it than if you’d put, for instance, Mark Noble in it. And ultimately, these clicks are the things that generate money.

Therefore, the news that CR7 is set to sign for Juventus makes this an exhilarating time, but it’s also a concerning time.

Because once the Portuguese superstar has left Real Madrid, will that put an end to the stories linking him with a return to Manchester United? The stories that have been generating income for the digital media industry for years and have pretty much single-handedly kept the Daily Star’s website in business (along with photos of boobs).

The answer to this is unknown, but the Sun aren’t taking any chances. They’re going big on Ronaldo to Man Utd while they still can, and today they claim that the universe’s most oft-speculated dream transfer “could still come true”.

Apparently, United’s transfer guru Ed Woodward is, as we speak, “crunching the numbers” trying to work out a way to beat Juve to the signing of the world’s most expensive 33-year-old.

The Old Trafford hierarchy would reportedly “love” Ronaldo to return and are aiming to “raise the funds” to pay his £88m transfer fee and £500,000-a-week wages, which would be offset by the commercial opportunities CR7 provides.

Now let the clicks rain down.

Liverpool swoop for Paulo Dybala

Liverpool have also sensed an opportunity in Ronaldo’s Bernabeu exit, with the Mirror reporting that the Reds will “take advantage” of Juve’s move for the forward by launching their own pursuit for Paulo Dybala.

The 24-year-old Argentine could be usurped by Ronaldo in the Juve team, just as the presence of Lionel Messi ensured he never got a look-in at the World Cup, and Liverpool have “asked about his availability”.

The Italian champions would be reluctant to sell, but Dybala could “push for a move” once the Ronaldo Show arrives in Turin.

It’s less promising news on another Liverpool target, the Roma goalkeeper Alisson, who now looks set to sign for Chelsea instead of the Reds.

Italian outlet Il Tempo says the Blues have offered the Brazilian a £100,000-a-week contract and are in pole position to sign him for £66m, despite rival interest from Real Madrid. although the Spanish giants would probably be quite happy to sign Thibaut Courtois instead.

Meanwhile, Chelsea could lose another star man, N’Golo Kante, to Paris Saint-Germain, who are prepared to pay £100m for the French midfielder (Goal). The Blues have lined up Lyon’s 21-year-old France Under-21 international Tanguy Ndombele as a potential replacement.

Elsewhere, Arsenal have approached PSV Eindhoven about signing their 22-year-old forward Hirving Lozano, who starred for Mexico at the World Cup (Talksport), Everton have rejected a £12m bid for RB Leipzig for their young English forward Ademola Lookman (Mirror) and Tottenham are favourites to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is biding his time to exploit the Midlanders’ financial woes (Mirror). He is such an evil genius.
