Gossip: Real Madrid 'want De Gea before World Cup', Mourinho linked with shock exit, Hammers 'in Yaya talks'

Could Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United spell be cut drastically short amid rumours of a departure?
Could Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United spell be cut drastically short amid rumours of a departure?

Like the red wine stain on the carpet, or the neighbourhood cat you once gave a biscuit to, or Craig David, the rumour about David de Gea going to Real Madrid is a thing that simply won’t go away.

So if you’re a Manchester United fan, you just have to live with it and try not to get too upset – even when it rears its head in such alarming fashion as it does today.

According to the Express, the European champions are looking to complete the signing of the Premier League’s best goalkeeper “BEFORE the World Cup”.

The reason they write “BEFORE” in capital letters like that is because, as you may know, the World Cup starts in six days’ time and it would rather shocking to think that De Gea is currently hobnobbing with the managerless Spaniards when she should be preparing to face Portugal next Friday night.

The other possibility, of course, is that this story has been completely made up by people who have nothing better to do with their time/lives. But then again, anything that distracts the Express from demonising Muslims is probably a good thing, so let’s humour them.

The article adds that Real aim to make De Gea “one of the best-paid players in their squad”, which would negate any pay rise the Red Devils might offer to persuade him to stay.

Diario Gol adds that United will only countenance the sale of De Gea if they can secure the signing of Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid reach out to Mourinho

Even then, the Star reports that Jose Mourinho is “refusing” to let De Gea move to the Bernabeu. But the problem with this is that the United manager is also being linked with Real Madrid himself.

Spanish gossip mongers OK Diario claim Real chiefs have “reached out” to the Special One to gauge whether he would be interested in returning to the club he left, somewhat acrimoniously, in 2013.

Having said that, most managers with a pulse are being linked with the vacant Bernabeu hotseat at the moment. AS says former Real stars Fernando Hierro, Michel and Guti are contenders for the role, while yesterday it was Antonio Conte and the day before that it was Jurgen Klopp. It’s only a matter of time before David O’ Leary’s name comes up.

West Ham want Yaya Toure

There is a potent whiff of inevitability in the Mail’s report that West Ham are “in talks” to sign the veteran midfielder Yaya Toure, because of course they are. The Hammers love nothing more than a creaking old superstar to clog up their wage bill, and they have just appointed his old Manchester City gaffer Manuel Pellegrini.

The Irons have also, according to the Mirror, placed a “monstrous” £60m valuation on their Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic which they hope Man Utd will be reckless enough to pay.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are interested in Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno and have been quoted £22m to sign him (Bild), Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez wants to reunite with his former Anfield defender Martin Skrtel, who is now 33 and playing for Fenerbahce (Aspor) and Barcelona and Real Madrid are battling to sign Santos wonderkid Rodrygo Goes (Marca). We’ll just have to wait and see where Rodrygo Goes goes.
