Guinea-Bissau 0-2 Nigeria LIVE! Troost-Ekong goal - AFCON 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria LIVE!

Sadiq Umar scored his first goal for Nigeria as they eased to a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in the Africa Cup of Nations to ensure a maximum return of nine points from their Group D matches.

Umar, who had a chance to open the scoring in the first-half but got the ball stuck under his feet,, netted when Kelechi Iheanacho’s excellent pass with the outside of his boot across the goal provided a tap-in for his teammate.

Nigeria were in cruise control and scored a second as William Troost Ekong netted from close-range after Moses Simon had hit the crossbar following a mazy run into the box.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but the Super Eagles were awarded their second after a long VAR review.

Nigeria had already won the group before kick-off, and became the only team to progress into the last 16 with three group-stage wins. Egypt finished second in Group D with six points, while Guinea-Bissau and Sudan were knocked out with one point each.

Nigeria go into the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations full of confidence after a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau kept their perfect run going.

Umar Sadiq’s second-half strike put his side in front, before captain William Troost-Ekong doubled the lead after a long VAR review. It means the Super Eagles are the only team to secure maximum points from the group stage.

They will face one of the best third-placed teams in the last 16 on Sunday, as their search for a fourth AFCON title continues.

It’s the first time since 2006 that Nigeria have all three of their group matches.

The Super Eagles won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980, 1984 and 2013. Are they going to add a fourth title to that list?

They are certainly up there with the likes of Cameroon and Senegal as one of the tournament favourites.

Troost-Ekong picks up MOTM award

22:07 , Matt Verri

A goal, a clean sheet and a win. Couldn’t have gone much better for Nigeria’s captain William Troost-Ekong.

He has the man of the match award to cap off a perfect night’s work.

Celebrations well underway...

Onto the last 16...

21:37 , Matt Verri

21:30 , Matt Verri

Just two groups left to be concluded in the tournament, with the remaining matches to take place tomorrow.

Defending champions Algeria face a real battle to go through - they will need to beat Ivory Coast and hope that is enough book their place in the last 16.

Here’s a reminder of how all the groups look.

21:18 , Matt Verri

Winning the group may prove to be crucial to Nigeria.

Egypt finished runners-up in Group D, and they will face the winners of Group E in the last 16. That looks like being the Ivory Coast as things stand. The winner of that clash would set up a quarter-final against Morocco or Malawi.

For Nigeria, it’s a last 16 tie against a best third-placed team. Get through that, and it will be Burkina Faso or Gabon in the quarters.

Lots of happy Nigerian fans in the ground...

What next...

21:05 , Matt Verri

Nigeria are back on action on Sunday, in the last 16.

They’ll face one of the best third-placed teams, with kick-off at 7pm GMT. We’ll know tomorrow who the opponents will be, when Group E and Group F come to a conclusion.

Super Eagles too good...

20:59 , Matt Verri

20:56 , Matt Verri

Egypt beat Sudan 1-0 in the other Group D match, so they will join Nigeria in the knockout stages.

Both Sudan and Guinea-Bissau will be exiting the tournament. Good news for some of those in third-place in other groups...

FULL-TIME

20:53 , Matt Verri

Job done for Nigeria!

They’re into the last 16 in style, with a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau. Sadiq and Troost-Ekong with the goals.

Three games, three wins, nine points. Perfect from the Super Eagles at AFCON.

20:51 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: How has Simon not got on the scoresheet?!

Olayinka lays it off to him, but Simon’s shot is into the side-netting. He could have had a hat-trick off the bench!

20:48 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Five minutes added on.

Uzoho taking his time over goal-kicks. He’s already been warned by the referee, and there’s no need for him to pick up a late yellow card.

20:47 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Not a huge amount of pace to do the game now. Super Eagles know their job is done.

Been an impressive performance from them once again, especially considering how many changes they made tonight.

20:45 , Matt Verri

87 mins: That’s nearly a consolation for Guinea-Bissau... rebound nearly turned in but Uzoho just about does enough. Was a poor parry into the six-yard box though. Got away with it.

Guinea-Bissau still pushing for that first goal of the tournament.

20:41 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Simon is at it again. They cannot cope with him anytime he picks up the ball and runs.

Chops into the box, past the keeper... wide from a tight angle. He’s been absolutely brilliant.

20:39 , Matt Verri

81 mins: So that’s surely the match wrapped up for Nigeria.

The goal deserved to stand just for that run from Simon. Super Eagles heading into the last 16 in style.

GOAL! Guinea-Bissau 0-2 Nigeria | William Troost-Ekong 76’

20:36 , Matt Verri

GOAL GIVEN!

The Super Eagles captain has a goal. Simon with the sensational run, Troost-Ekong with the simplest of finishes.

Nigeria lead 2-0!

20:35 , Matt Verri

And still we wait. Check taking a couple of minutes now, maybe longer.

Clearly it’s very tight. Going to have to make a decision at some point!

GOOO... OFFSIDE!

20:33 , Matt Verri

Inches away from the best goal of the tournament!

Simon with an outrageous run, beats three defenders with brilliant pieces of skill. Left-footed strike hammers off the bar and Troost-Ekong turns in the rebound from a couple of yards.

Offside flag goes up. It’s tight, so we have another check...

20:31 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Iheanacho desperate to get on the scoresheet too.

Picks it up on the edge of the box and curls an effort towards the far post. Gets a small deflection, corner Nigeria.

20:29 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Iwobi very nearly plays Simon in on goal, but it’s blocked. Falls back to the Everton man who shoots from 12 yards out... blocked again.

Nigeria continue to look dangerous every time they come forward.

20:26 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Heavy collision in midfield between Ndidi and Cande. Both flew into a challenge to try and claim the loose ball.

Triple change from Guinea-Bissau. They’ll be desperate to at least get their first goal of the tournament in the final 20 minutes.

20:24 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Simon has looked sharp since coming on, running down the left wing.

He puts a ball into the box where there are few Nigerian shirts, but none of them can get on the end of the cross.

20:22 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Iwobi tracks back and blocks a cross, but he concedes the corner. Chance for Guinea-Bissau to get the defenders up.

Sangante gets on the end of it, but his header is well over the bar. Difficult chance, he was moving away from goal as it was swung in.

20:20 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Just to confirm those subs made after the goal - Simon and Olayinka on, Sadiq and Ejuke off.

Bura gets back well for Guinea-Bissau to stop Nigeria breaking into the box. Super Eagles going through to the last 16 in style as it stands.

20:18 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Jorginho with a brilliant run and Ajayi brings him down right on the edge of the box. This is a great position for Guinea-Bissau.

Five players standing over this. It’s Cande... GREAT EFFORT.

Uzoho has to get across and tip it behind for a corner. Good save.

20:15 , Matt Verri

GOAL GIVEN!

Nigeria do have the lead. And that was Sadiq’s final touch as he’s now brought off.

Can Guinea-Bissau find a response?

20:15 , Matt Verri

VAR checking this though... is Sadiq offside? It’s tight. Cande might just be playing him onside.

It’s a really long check.

GOAL! Guinea-Bissau 0-1 Nigeria | Umar Sadiq 56'

20:13 , Matt Verri

NIGERIA HAVE THE LEAD!

And it’s a lovely goal from the Super Eagles. Ball played through to Iheanacho, who sends a perfect ball across the face of goal with the outside of his left foot and Sadiq has a tap in at the back post.

Super Eagles on course to make it three wins from three.

20:12 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Nigeria are operating a shoot on sight policy here!

Iheanacho this time from practically his own half, but this is a much better effort. Gomis desperately tries to get back and just about tips it over the bar.

Good ball in from Nwakali, but it’s headed away.

20:10 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Sadiq pounces on a loose pass on the halfway line. Doesn’t have anybody up with him, and instead of turning back decides to try and catch Gomis off his line.

File that one under ‘optimistic’... never close to troubling the goalkeeper.

20:08 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Guinea-Bissau have their second shot of the match and it’s not much better than the first.

Cassama tries his luck from range but he can’t control the shot and it’s miles over the bar.

20:06 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Iwobi tries to play it round the corner to Iheanacho for a one-two... the Leicester man isn’t where he thinks he is.

Ebuehi forward from right-back and goes to knock it past Piqueti, but he stands on the ball and loses possession.

20:04 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Nigeria break and play it wide to Sadiq. He tries to bring it forward but once agin Sangante is out to clear the danger.

Ajayi then steps out of defence well to stop Balde turning into space.

20:02 , Matt Verri

Back underway for the second-half... no changes from either side at the break.

20:00 , Matt Verri

Players in the tunnel, and now coming back out for the second-half.

Final 45 minutes of Group D coming up!

19:56 , Matt Verri

Some first-half stats for you...

Guinea-Bissau actually finished the half with 51% possession after a decent last five minutes. They’ve only managed one shot though, compared to Nigeria’s five.

Only shot on target in the match was Kelechi Iheanacho’s volley at the back post from a corner. Not been a match full of chances.

19:55 , Matt Verri

Will be interesting to see whether Nigeria bring on some of their other first-team players in the second-half.

No need for them to risk anything with qualification already secured... but it will tell us how important going through with maximum points is for them.

19:49 , Matt Verri

Egypt lead Sudan 1-0 at half-time in the other Group D match.

As it stands, Nigeria would top the group with seven points, Egypt in second with six points, and both Guinea-Bissau and Sudan would be knocked out.

The Super Eagles will want to go through in style though, so improvements needed in the second-half.

HALF-TIME

19:46 , Matt Verri

Guinea-Bissau 0-0 Nigeria

Just the one minute of added time, and that’s half-time. Goalless at the break.

Nigeria have had a couple of decent chances, an Ajayi header and then an opening for Sadiq in the box, but not a huge amount created. Guinea-Bissau enjoyed their best spell of the match in the final couple of minutes.

19:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Ejuke has to do some defensive work as Encada brings it forward. Nigeria man slides it and concedes the corner.

Better ball from Cande, headed out to the edge of the box. Jorginho is completely free and he volleys it back at goal... off his shin and it spins well wide.

19:42 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Hasn’t been a huge amount of action, the more this half has gone on. Nigeria haven’t been able to find the final ball they need as of yet.

Corner Guinea-Bissau, their first of the match. Cande will take it. Looped to the back post where it’s volleyed away by Nigeria.

19:39 , Matt Verri

39 mins: More good work from Balde as he receives the ball on the halfway line. Holds it up, turns and is then fouled as he tried to bring it forward.

Sangante is down now, after a challenge from Sadiq. Another free-kick for Guinea-Bissau and the referee warns the Nigeria man.

19:37 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Gomis comes out for no reason in goal for Guinea-Bissau... gets away with it.

Ball played through to Sadiq, he’s running onto it but Sangante has the pace to get back and clear. As he does, Gomis is suddenly right there too. Would have been an empty net to finish into for Sadiq, had Sangante not got across.

19:35 , Matt Verri

35 mins: There are just so many Guinea-Bissau bodies getting back on the edge of the box.

Sadiq and Ejuke keep picking it up in nice positions, but they’re struggling to pick the killer pass.

19:33 , Matt Verri

33 mins: That was nearly lovely from Balde. Ball gets played to him on the edge of the Nigeria box, he cushions a pass through to a teammate making the run but Ajayi gets across well.

Guinea-Bissau have offered very little in attack, but when they have it’s all come through Balde.

19:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Brilliant from Ejuke, turns past Encada superbly and he’s away. Guinea-Bissau desperately try and scramble back, and they get it behind for corner.

Deep ball, Iheanacho volleys it at goal but it’s a comfortable enough save for Gomis. Straight at the goalkeeper.

19:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Ajayi brings the ball forward out of defence, and plays it out wide to Iwobi before continuing his run into the box.

The Everton winger tries to swing it in towards the centre-back, but it’s nowhere near Ajayi or Iheanacho. Headed away.

19:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: 68% of possession for Nigeria and three shots. Guinea-Bissau yet to have an attempt.

But no goals yet for the Super Eagles. Got to feel it will come if the match continues like this, one-way traffic.

19:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

Sadiq has to score for Nigeria but he’s made a complete mess of it. Clean through on goal inside the box, gets round the goalkeeper but then gets the ball stuck under his feet. Tries to turn back, but the defenders are there to clear by that point.

Biggest moment of the match by far.

19:23 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Iwobi seeing more and more of the ball now. He plays it inside to Iheanacho who tries to poke a ball through, but there’s so many defenders back.

Balde tries to get on the end of a long ball for Guinea-Bissau... it’s a lonely task for him up front. Nigeria clear the danger.

19:22 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Corner eventually taken, flicked away at the near post.

Nigeria keep possession though and stay on the attack. Iwobi with a lovely clipped ball into the box, Sadiq is completely free and tries to head it down to Ajayi... but it’s behind the centre-back and the chance goes.

19:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Ejuke again picks it up on the left and drives inside. Space opens up for him and he has a shot from range blocked by Cassama.

The Guinea-Bissau midfielder stays down, he’s hurt himself getting in the way of that effort.

19:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Guinea-Bissau bring it forward with Jorginho, but Ndidi harries him and quickly wins it back.

Iwobi plays a long ball across the pitch, Ejuke can’t quite get on the end of it though.

19:15 , Matt Verri

15 mins: This time Nigeria do get a free-kick, as Sadiq goes down out wide on the left.

Brilliant ball in from Nwakali, goalkeeper comes but gets nowhere near it. Ajayi in front of him gets a good head on it, but it’s over the bar. That was a decent chance.

19:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Collins has space on the left, and time to whip in a deep cross into the box.

Iwobi tries to follow it in at the back post, but it bounces in front of him and he can’t bring it under control.

Iheanacho then tries to bundle his way through the Guinea-Bissau defence, goes down but there’s no foul there. Pressure building...

19:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Guinea-Bissau nearly in to score!

That came completely out of nothing. Ball just clipped over the Nigeria defence, Balde pokes it past Ajayi and briefly it looks like he’s clean through.

Uzoho comes off his line well though to claim, and it’s a painful collision between him and Balde.

19:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Good from Collins, doesn’t let Encada just see the ball out for a throw-in and he wins it back for Nigeria.

He then puts a decent long throw into the box himself, but it bounces up and hits Iheanacho’s arm.

19:07 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Nwakali tries a long ball over the top towards Iwobi, but not enough on it and it’s headed away.

Nigeria look comfortable in possession, knocking it around in defence without too much pressure being put on them. Ejuke brings down a long ball brilliantly, but he can’t beat his man.

19:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: It’s been a really bright start from Sadiq and he takes it down the outside past Sangante again.

He wants another corner for Nigeria, but he won’t get it this time. Good direct running though.

19:04 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Floated into the box and Balde is not far away at all from getting on the end of it in the box. Nigeria a bit open from the set-piece.

Sadiq then brings it forward for the Super Eagles into the box... wins a corner. Bit of a lunge, Guinea-Bissau need to be careful about those kind of tackles in the box.

19:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Sounds like a good atmosphere in the stadium, plenty of Nigeria fans in attendance.

Guinea-Bissau enjoying some early possession, and Piqueti wins a cheap free-kick for his side.

KICK-OFF!

19:00 , Matt Verri

We are underway! Let’s hope for another AFCON thriller.

18:54 , Matt Verri

Here we go then... players are out onto the pitch.

Final round of Group D matches are upon us!

Almost ready...

18:51 , Matt Verri

18:42 , Matt Verri

Just under 20 minutes until kick-off in Cameroon.

Nigeria to make it three from three, a famous shock win for Guinea-Bissau... or something in between?

Not long now.

Elsewhere in Group D...

18:34 , Matt Verri

Egypt face Sudan in the other match in the group this evening.

With three points on the board, a win or a draw for Egypt tonight and they’ll be joining Nigeria in the last 16.

After Ghana’s shock exit last night though, they won’t be taking anything for granted!

Inside the dressing rooms...

18:27 , Matt Verri

18:23 , Matt Verri

Guinea-Bissau have failed to score in any of their last six matches - that includes the two group matches they’ve played so far.

That’s got to change for them tonight, or they’ll be knocked out of the tournament.

No such problems for Nigeria who have kept the spine of their team together tonight, in Ekong, Ndidi and Iheanacho, to provide some stability for all those coming in around them.

Early look at the pitch...

18:19 , Matt Verri

Guinea-Bissau lineup

18:16 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Gomis, Cande, Sangate, Mane, Encada, Cassama, Nougueira, Camara, Intima, Djassi, Balde

Subs: Jonas Mendes, Alves, Simao Junior, Rodrigues, Ambri, Pele, Frederic Mendy, Fernandy Mendy, Nanu, Semedo, Manuel Balde.

18:08 , Matt Verri

So that’s eight changes for Nigeria tonight. Only Ekong Ndidi and Iheanacho remain in the starting lineup.

That means there’s chances for the likes of Ajayi and Iwobi from the off, in what still looks a very strong Nigeria team.

Nigeria lineup

18:03 , Matt Verri

Pre-match walk earlier today...

17:58 , Matt Verri

17:52 , Matt Verri

Team news to come in the next 5-10 minutes.

Guinea-Bissau have no choice but to go as strong as they can. Nigeria have the freedom to rotate, but they may choose to keep a settled lineup and try and keep the winning momentum going.

All will be revealed soon...

Perfect from Nigeria so far...

17:48 , Matt Verri

The Super Eagles got their AFCON campaign off to the perfect start, beating Egypt 1-0 in what was their toughest game of the group on paper.

They backed that up with a 3-1 win over Sudan, and it means Nigeria are the only team to able to progress from the group-stage with a perfect record.

Cameroon missed their chance to do so after drawing with Cape Verde in their final match... can Nigeria do it?

Teams already through to last 16

17:34 , Matt Verri

Cameroon are through to the knockout stages as winners of Group A, with Burkina Faso qualifying in second.

Senegal and Guinea progressed from Group B, while Morocco and Gabon were the two to make it out of Group C. Ghana finished bottom of that group, crashing out of the tournament.

In terms of the third-placed groups so far, Cape Verde and Malawi both finished with four points, while Comoros could only manage three. It looks like four points could be needed to make it through.

Prediction

17:25 , Matt Verri

Nigeria have been one of the most impressive teams at the tournament so far, and even if they do decide to make changes they are still expected to win.

They look in good shape to secure their place in the last 16 with a perfect group-stage record.

Nigeria to win, 2-0

Nigeria team news

17:14 , Matt Verri

Nigeria have the freedom to rotate the team with a place in the knockout stages already secured.

There are not believed to be any major injury issues in their squad. Kelechi Iheanacho was brought off after 65 minutes against Sudan with the result already secured, and he may start again tonight before being taken off and saved for the last 16.

Guinea-Bissau team news

17:05 , Matt Verri

Alfa Semedo, Nanu and Mimito missed out for Guinea-Bissau last time out and may not recover in time to face Nigeria.

The squad have suffered positive Covid-19 cases throughout the tournament, and that could impact selection once again.
