Efficient, ruthless and clinical were not words one would have associated with London Irish this season. In only their third win, these characteristics were unlocked by a sluggish Harlequins side.

The first win of the Declan Kidney and Les Kiss era had been due despite relegation looking inevitable.

South African scrum-half Piet Van Zyl secured his brace for the Irish by the 14th minute. After each of the early tries Quins tried to go on the attack but director of rugby John Kingston highlighted how his side were not making any ground on the “no-talent battles”.

“We will have to have a good look at this because it is completely unacceptable,” he said. “Obviously, I haven’t seen the stats – my bet would be that we were outworked where it mattered, and much of that is mental.”

A further first-half try came for the visitors courtesy of open side Max Northcote-Green. Tommy Bell slotted a penalty on the stroke of the break to take the score to 22-0.

There was a further Bell penalty  after the interval, showing the side’s pragmatic approach to hold on to a lead despite being close to the line.

Kidney, Irish’s technical consultant, revealed his own pragmatism in terms of building on the foundations laid down by Nick Kennedy. “The boys were trying to add value to what they had been doing before because they’d been knocking on the door,” he said.

“It just goes to show if one or two of those matches had gone their way, the table would be completely different. We haven’t tried to change at a great rate, we’ve just tried to build on the work that has been done already.”

Flanker Jack Clifford crashed over for Harlequins’ only points. Irish sealed their bonus point via a Tom Fowlie try.
