Harry Kane shatters Alan Shearer's Premier League goalscoring record and Lionel Messi's European record
Harry Kane netted his 37th, 38th and 39th Premier League goals of 2017 on Saturday, breaking the record of ex-England and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer for goals in a calendar year.
Kane was on hand after 21 minutes to hit his 94th Premier League goal for the club in his 136th appearance as Tottenham took the lead against Southampton at Wembley.
Sixteen minutes later Kane added his second goal of the game – and his 55th of the year in all – to break the European record of 54 that had been held by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
He completed his hat-trick – his eighth of the year – to notch an incredible 56th calendar goal as Spurs won 5-2.
The England striker averages 0.70 goals per game and has buried 13 penalties in that time.

Kane said: “I’m very proud Messi and Ronaldo have dominated football for so long and are two of the best players ever.
“To be compared to them, or just be up there with them is a great honour.”
Before the match, Kane had fired in 520 shots, 234 of which were on target. He has now scored 50 goals since Southampton striker Shane Long has last hit the target.
