Hartwick women drop lacrosse opener to New Paltz

Feb. 28—The Hartwick women's lacrosse team couldn't hold off SUNY New Paltz in a 9-7 loss at home Wednesday to open their 2024 season.

After jumping out to a 4-1 lead, Hartwick allowed four straight goals to end the second half. New Paltz was then able to pull ahead in a back-and-forth second half.

Kristen Vaccalleri scored five goals for the Hawks in the loss while Katrina Marten and Hanna Goodreau scored as well.

Brooke Lynett made 13 saves in goal.

Hartwick will visit SUNY Morrisville next Wednesday.

RPI 16, SUNY Oneonta 11 (Tuesday)

The Oneonta women fell on the road to RPI 16-11 Tuesday.

After entering the half trailing by one, Oneonta tied things up 7-7 early in the third quarter. But RPI responded with five unanswered goals to pull away for the win.

Cassidy Moore led the Red Dragons with four goals and an assist while Ellie Downey and Marissa Evans each scored twice.

Lauren Mancini, Margaret Byrne and Paige Wilkinson each found the back of the net as well for Oneonta.

In goal, Courtney Gallagher made six saves while Julia Hawkins added another stop.

Oneonta (0-2) will be at Clarkson Saturday, March 9.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Skidmore 15, SUNY Oneonta 8

The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-8 decision to Skidmore Wednesday on the road.

Trailing 8-6 at halftime, the Red Dragons surrendered six unanswered goals to start the second half and were never able to recover.

Jamie O'Neil netted a hat trick in the loss while Thomas Hnis potted two goals. Also scoring for Oneonta were Stephen Barikyan, Matthew Krieg and Anthony Munro.

Harrison Boukas finished with 12 saves in net.

The Red Dragons (1-1) will be at SUNY Morrisville Saturday.

SOFTBALL

The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped both games of its season-opening doubleheader against Rowan Tuesday. The Red Dragons dropped the first game 8-0 and lost game two 7-1.

Gianna Cancelleri went 1-for-2 with a steal in game one while Marissa Dionisio took the loss in the circle.

Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third of game two on a Rowan fielding error before allowing seven unanswered runs.

Julia Serena and Sophia Mangone each went 2-for-3 in the loss while Emily Brown had four strikeouts in five innings in the circle.

Oneonta will be off until March 12 when it heads to Oregon to face Lewis & Clark.
