Hector Lombard Returning to Middleweight After Welterweight Loss to Neil Magny

Hector Lombard, a former Bellator middleweight champion, announced that he's returning to the 185-pound division.

Lombard (34-5-1, 2 NC) made his UFC debut in July 2012 against Tim Boetsch. The Cuban Olympian in judo lost via split decisions that night in Alberta, Canada, but rebounded from the loss by scoring a first-round knockout over Rousimar Palhares in his next outing.

After losing to Yushin Okami in March 2013, Lombard decided to drop down to the welterweight division. He won his firs two fights in the 170-pound division. He defeated Josh Burkman in his third fight at welterweight, but the unanimous decision win was later changed to a no contest after Lombard tested positive to steroids.

After paying a fine and serving a 12-month suspension, Lombard returned to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 85 on March 20 against Neil Magny. After overcoming a one-sided beatdown in the first round, Magny rallied back in the second and third rounds, and became the first fighter to ever finish the Cuban.

Lombard has had a week to reflect on the loss, eventually deciding a return to the middleweight division was in the cards.

“I left everything that I had in my last fight. I asked my body to perform, but I got no reply. When your body says no and stops functioning there is nothing you can do about it,” the 38-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Lombard's decision to return to the 185-pound weight class was partially influenced by the recent ban on using intravenous (IV) fluids to rehydrate after a weight cut.

“I'm very happy to be back fighting at my original weight 185,” he said. “Now with no IV allowed, I will be able to fight in a healthier weight for me.”
