A “heroic” schoolboy has died after getting trapped underwater in a canal.

Logan Folger, 14, was attempting to rescue another young person who got into difficulty in the water, according to friends and family.

Derbyshire Police said they were called by East Midlands Ambulance Service just before 4.50pm on Wednesday to reports of a boy in the canal near Mill Green in Staveley.

Firefighters attended to help Logan out of the water and he was taken to hospital by paramedics in a serious condition. The teenager died in hospital on Saturday.

Briteney Poole described Logan as a “legend.”

“From been a young lad you’ve always had an heart of gold,” she posted on Facebook.

Troy Betts said an event was being organised in Logan’s honour on Friday. He added it would be a send off for the “hero” teenager who had “saved a life to lose his own”, reported the Derbyshire Times.

Derbyshire Fire group manager, Lee Williams, added: “It’s devastating to be reporting yet another water fatality this summer.

“I would like to extend the thoughts and sympathy of everyone at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and to the family and friends of the deceased at this distressing time.

“It’s yet another reminder of how dangerous open water can be due to hidden currents or debris, and the risk of cold-water shock.

“Please remember Float to Live, and if someone’s in trouble in the water call 999 and ask for the Fire Service.”
