Diogo Jota says Portugal will not crack under the pressure of defending their crown at Euro 2020.

Portugal go into the tournament as the holders and one of the favourites, given the talent in their squad.

As well as Liverpool forward Jota, they also boast the likes of Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City pair Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva.

Portugal kick off their campaign in Budapest on Tuesday evening when they take on Hungary in Group F, this tournament’s ‘Group of Death’, which also contains Germany and France.

But Jota says he and his team-mates are ready for the challenge and are not feeling the weight of expectation by going into the tournament as holders.

“It’s not an extra weight, it’s a huge pride for what happened in 2016 — it made us all proud,” he said.

“The opponents look at us differently and they want to defeat us. Hungary will have even more motivation to play at home, with a packed stadium, which we are not used to in the last year. We know the difficulties that entails and it is very important to start with a victory.”

Ronaldo, too, has spoken of the need for Portugal to start with a win, particularly given their next games will be against France and Germany.

“The team is well prepared and, therefore, what I most want is to start on the right foot,” he said. “Winning the first game is crucial in these competitions. I see a [Portugal] team with enormous potential. Only at the end will we see if it’s better or worse than 2016.”
