According to Forbes, Hollywood producer Tyler Perry is now a billionaire.
According to Forbes, the 51 year old has created 1200 episodes of television, 22 feature film and two dozen stage plays - on top of his brand new venture Tyler Perry Studios; a film studio built on a former Confederate army base with sound stages named after iconic Black creatives.
Speaking to Forbes, he said of the studios: “I can go outside and take this dirt and put it on my hands and know that there were Confederate soldiers here walking this land, plotting and planning everything they could to keep us Negroes in place.”
“The very fact that I am here on this land, the very fact that hundreds of people—Black and brown people—come here to make a living, that is effecting change.”
With stars such as fellow billionaire Oprah Winfrey looking out for him as an emerging filmmaker, he has since netted a fortune which includes several homes in the US (including the mega mansion in Los Angeles that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reportedly lived in over lockdown). He has in the past secured deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars with the likes of ViacomCBS and reportedly made $290 million in fees and profits, according to Forbes.
The outlet estimates he has earned $1.4 billion in pretax income over the past 15 years.
Last year, Forbes estimated that there are only 13 Black billionaires in the world (led by Aliko Dongate) - with Perry bringing that number up to 14 now in 2020.
