The Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh on Saturday (5.30pm) looks a fascinating race, but the small field may see a tactical race.

First established in 1895, it was originally run over 1m until it was extended to its current length of 1m4f in 1915. Several fillies have won both the English and Irish Oaks, including last year’s heroine Enable.

We take a look at the field for this year’s renewal, which is worth £228,000:

BYE BYE BABY (Aidan O’Brien)

Very much the third-string of Aidan O’Brien’s trio of runners according to Genting Bet, she was twice a winner last season, including taking a Listed soft-ground contest over 1m at Navan.

The daughter of Galileo improved this year, taking the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes at The Curragh in May, again with plenty of ease in the ground, and was a fine third in the Investec Oaks to stablemate Together Forever on her penultimate run.

That was her first try over 1m2f, but she was not so effective in quicker ground when fourth in the 1m2f Juddmonte Pretty Polly here earlier this month when well held by Urban Fox.

She may need softer ground to show her best and is not certain to get it.

TOGETHER FOREVER (Aidan O’Brien)

Another daughter of super sire Galileo, Together Forever was a maiden when she landed the Investec Oaks on her first attempt over 1m4f. She has a bit to find with stablemate Magic Wand on her runner-up effort in the Listed Cheshire Oaks on her seasonal debut, and she will have her supporters, having chased home Urban Fox in the Group 1 Pretty Polly last time. She was an odds-on favourite that day and was beaten three and a quarter lengths under Ryan Moore.

This time she will have the assistance of trainer’s son, Donnacha O’Brien, on board.

MAGIC WAND (Aidan O’Brien)

Ryan Moore jumps ship for the English Oaks winner to ride another of Galileo’s offspring. Magic Wand comfortably beat stablemate Together Forever at Chester in the spring, but the latter reversed the form in some style when claiming Classic glory in the Investec Oaks at Epsom, with Magic Wand only fourth.

However, Magic Wand is a hot favourite to land this Irish Classic and reassert her superiority following last month’s impressive win the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that O’Brien could land his sixth Irish Oaks and his trio of runners fill the frame.

MARY TUDOR (Willie McCreery)

Rated an outsider according to the Genting Bet horse racing odds, the daughter of Dawn Approach got off the mark in a Listed contest at Navan on her three-year-old debut.

That run was over 1m2f in yielding/soft ground, when equipped with a first-time hood. She disappointed when dropped back to 1m for the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown and the hood was dispensed with when runner-up at Naas in a 1m2f Listed contest.

This will be her first try over this trip but she needs to find bags on improvement. However, the hood is back on again in the hope it will have the desired effect.

ROMIYNA (Dermot Weld)

Dermot Weld has won this race twice before, the first in 1981 with Blue Wind and the second in 1996 with Dance Design. Perhaps he is due another success?

Inexperience is the only thing likely to hold back the daughter of Nathaniel, who carries the distinctive Green (with red epaulets) of owner the Aga Khan.

For Romiyna has had just two starts. She impressed by taking a Gowran Park 1m4f maiden by six lengths in May, but was well held by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Water Lily in the Listed Oaks Trial at Naas last month. This looks a big class hike, but she is entitled to improve.

SEA OF CLASS (William Haggas)

The sole English raider may be the biggest threat to breaking the O’Brien stranglehold. The daughter of Sea The Stars takes her first step into the top-level after winning two Listed contests at Newbury by two lengths on each occasion.

She had been considered for the Oaks, but her trainer decided to keep her in calmer waters over 1m2f last time and she defied a penalty in good style.

She is entitled to improve and whatever the outcome here, she may well be considered for the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood next time.

TISSIAK (Joseph Patrick O’Brien)

The O’Brien Brothers, Joseph and Donnacha, notched a first Irish Classic success as Latrobe, who won a maiden at the Curragh previously, held off Rostropovich and Saxon Warrior, both trained by their father, Aidan, in the Irish Derby.

That was Joseph’s first Classic as a trainer, having won the Irish Derby as a jockey on Camelot, sire of Latrobe, in 2012 and on Australia in 2014.

However, Tissiak will have to find bags of improvement to give O’Brien a second Irish Classic. She won her maiden well here in June, but looked a little one-paced when beaten by Easter Lily at Naas.
