HOT FOOTBALL TRANSFER GOSSIP: United 'to swoop' for £140m Neymar while Ivanovic is wanted in Italy

Manchester United are ready to pounce for unhappy Barcelona star Neymar by triggering his £140m release clause.

The Brazil attacker’s contract talks with Barca have stalled, and United boss Louis Van Gaal, armed only with a world record transfer fee, plans to swoop – according to the Daily Star.

Whether Neymar fancies a crack at the Europa League remains to be seen – it’s definitely a trophy he is unlikely to win if he stays at the Nou Camp but then again so is the Capital One Cup, Simod Cup, LDV Vans Trophy or the Super Bowl.

Although the Neymar news will have fans dancing in the streets of Manchester, London, Hong Kong, Mars and just about every other city/town/hamlet/asteroids, these same people/aliens will file home in stunned silence once they read the Sun’s report that Nick Powell will be going out on loan to a Championship club for the rest of the season.

Preston are favourites to land the 21-year-old – the same club that created the David Beckham diamond from the lump of coal handed to them by Sir Alex Ferguson all those years ago and where future Old Trafford legendary keeper Sam Johnstone is currently plying his trade.

Elsewhere, the Transfer Window rumour mill is still in sleepy, post-Christmas mode.

The Daily Mirror reports that Chelsea and Serbia defender Branislav Ivanovic, 31, is a transfer target for AC Milan after being linked with rivals Inter Milan while soon-to-be out-of-contract 34-year-old Liverpool defender Kolo Toure is wanted by Lazio – claims the Daily Express.

The rest of the transfer speculation is about players NOT going anywhere…

The Times say Southampton will not be selling bad-boy Sadio Mane or Victor Wanyama as manager Ronaldo Koeman has told them to focus on their football, while the Sun reports that Stoke’s Bojan Krkic, who is 14 times worse than Neymar with a measly £10m release clause, won’t be offloaded…

Champions League hopefuls Tottenham and Championship chasers Newcastle can forget Marseille’s 22-year-old Belgium forward Michy Batshuayi, writes the Daily Mirror.

And Arsenal have been told by Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller they will not get their hands on free-scoring Mexican Javier Hernandez – at least that’s what the Sun says.

Finally, the agent of Zlatan Ibrahamovic insists on the Evening Standard website that the 34-year-old would be the “perfect fit” for the Premier League – but then again, he would wouldn’t he…?
