Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Arsenal and Chelsea 'battle for Costa', Bayern Munich 'want Xhaka', Man City 'target Kimmich'

Kimmich, Costa and Xhaka - where will they end up?

In the entire history of the Premier League, there have been three players with the name Helder – in every naming combination possible – and none of them have been much cop.

First it appeared as a surname in the form of Glenn Helder, the ineffective Arsenal winger with a dodgy perm from the mid-1990s. Ten years later it was a Christian name, but with similarly disappointing results, as Portuguese striker Helder Postiga flopped at Tottenham. The other player called Helder was simply called “Helder” – the Newcastle defender who was injured for the vast majority of his loan spell at St James’ Park in the 1999/2000 season.

There are two alternative conclusions to be reached from this: 1) Don’t buy players called Helder because they are not good, or 2) By the law of averages the Premier League is due a good Helder.

It appears that Arsenal and Chelsea, bless their optimistic little cotton socks, have taken the latter option.

Today’s Sun reports that the London rivals are ready to “battle it out” for Helder Costa, the £20m-rated Portuguese winger who plays for Wolves.

Blues manager Antonio Conte was apparently impressed by the 23-year-old when Chelsea came up against the Championship side in the FA Cup last month, while Gunners scouts watched him in Wolves’ match against Rotherham at the weekend – a game in which Costa missed a penalty. Curse of the Helder?

The Gunners might buy him anyway just to make up the numbers, given the ever-expanding exodus of players tipped to leave the Emirates. The latest is Granit Xhaka, who according to the Star is “on the radar” of Bayern Munich. At least that’s what former Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld reckons.

Arsenal also look set to face competition for one of their top transfer targets, the Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, from Atletico Madrid (Marca). On the plus side, the Spanish club are currently banned from buying new players. On the down side, that ban will probably be lifted – and Atletico are better than Arsenal.

Elsewhere, Manchester City are tracking Bayern Munich’s out-of-favour German international full-back Joshua Kimmich (Mirror), Chelsea want to make a double “wonderkid” swoop by signing Rangers’ 15-year-old Billy Gilmour and 16-year-old Ajax starlet Daishan Redan (Mirror) and Luke Shaw’s “inner circle” believe Jose Mourinho still “holds a grudge” against the left-back for choosing to sign for Man Utd instead of Chelsea three years ago – and that’s why he never picks him (Times).

Finally, David Moyes “took advantage of Sunderland’s free weekend to…” Come up with a survival strategy? Go to Dubai? Watch some box sets? Volunteer at a foodbank? No, he went on a “scouting mission to Scotland”- specifically the Scottish Championship match between Dundee United and Hibernian (Sunderland Echo). Moyesy is really a man who knows how to live (although he evidently think players in the Scottish Premiership are of a bit too high a level to attract to Sunderland).
