Gossip: Arsenal 'target Cuadrado instead of Lemar', Man Utd 'scout Benfica starlet' and more

Arsenal dilemma: Thomas Lemar or Juan Cuadrado for Arsene Wenger?
Arsenal dilemma: Thomas Lemar or Juan Cuadrado for Arsene Wenger?

This season is all about adjusting expectations for Arsenal.

Can’t play in the Champions League? Attack the Europa League instead. Can’t get Alexis to sign a new contract? Just keep Giroud. Can’t fill your ground? Just get some German fans to do it. Can’t manage to sign Thomas Lemar? Just buy Juan Cuadrado.

Details of this latest adjustment are revealed in today’s Mirror, which says the Gunners will turn to the 29-year-old former Chelsea flop in lieu of continuing their pursuit of the 21-year-old Monaco sensation.

It’s actually a bit unfair to describe Cuadrado simply as a “former Chelsea flop” because he’s been rather good at Juventus, so much so that the Italians might not actually let him leave anyway.

In which case Arsenal would just have to adjust expectations again and make a bid for Robert Snodgrass.

The Gunners are set to be similarly unsuccessful in their chase of Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot, who Talksport says will snub Arsenal and Tottenham in favour of a move Inter Milan. Or likelier still, just stay at PSG.

Klopp watched defenders ‘500 million times’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp appears to have a completely different approach to transfers and will adjust his expectations for no one.

Goal reports that the German coach opted against buying a new centre-back this summer because he was only interested in one man – the unavailable Virgil van Dijk.

Klopp said he watched the alternative defensive options “500 million times” but was not convinced any of them were better than Dejan Lovren. At least he’s thorough.

Manchester United should sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to achieve greatness, according to former Red Devils striker Louis Saha (Mirror). It’s unclear what influence the opinions of Louis Saha have on Jose Mourinho’s decision-making in the transfer market, but it’s probably huge.

Mourinho has also reportedly sent United scouts to watch Benfica’s 21-year-old Serbia winger Andrija Zivkovic (O Jojo) – which was probably Louis Saha’s idea as well.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao defender and former Manchester City target Aymeric Laporte is set to reject a move to Barcelona in favour of joining Real Madrid (Don Balon), RB Leipzig striker and Liverpool target Timo Werner is “open” to a move to the Premier League (Star) and James Rodriguez’ wife Daniela Ospina – the sister of Arsenal goalkeeper David – has revealed she ended her six-year marriage with the Colombian superstar when he joined Bayern Munich because she “did not want to travel to Germany” (Mirror). Flimsiest excuse for dumping someone ever.
