Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Barcelona ‘target Glen Johnson’, PSG ‘plan Griezmann swoop’

WHAT a season it’s been for Glen Johnson. Four games, no victories, one thigh injury, one call-up to the England squad and now - wait for it - one link with a move to Barcelona. Yes, really. Really really.

The Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has reported that the Catalan giants are considering the 32-year-old Stoke City man because they want to add an experienced, “low-cost” right-back to their squad.

It seems they’re trying to replicate the success rivals Real Madrid had when they also signed a low-cost former West Ham right-back, Julien Faubert.

To be fair, there aren’t many of the world’s experienced, low-cost right-backs who aren’t mentioned in Mundo Deportivo’s story.

The journalist who wrote it, some character named Xavier Munoz whose photo by-line shows him with a dashing goatee beard, says Barca might also be considering Branislav Ivanovic, Antonio Valencia, Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta, along with some other people.

It’s basically just a list of right-backs. But who cares, Glen Johnson is on it and that’s all that matters. No one can ever take this away from him.

In less important news, Paris Saint-Germain are set to rival Manchester United for the signing of Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann, reports the Mirror.

The French champions are preparing a “bumper offer” for the Euro 2016 top scorer and would have no trouble paying the £89m release clause in his contract. Plus, they still haven’t replaced Zlatan Ibrahimovic properly. Maybe United can try sending him back next summer instead.

West Brom are planning to spend lots of their new Chinese money in January, with the Express and Star reporting that Tony Pulis is targeting Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva and Bundesliga top scorer Anthony Modeste of FC Koln. That would make him happier than Hal Robson-Kanu did.

Manchester City and Liverpool face competition for highly rated Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud from Juventus, who are set to open the bidding for the Germany Under-21 star with a £13.5m bid in January, says Talksport. That’s despite him being available for £8.5m next summer due to a clause in his contract. Juventus have ruined it for everyone there.

Elsewhere, Schalke are set to activate their option to buy on-loan Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb for £17m (Mirror), Arsenal and Everton are battling to sign 17-year-old Hull City left-back Josh Tymon (also Mirror) and Wolves want to speak to Sam Allardyce about becoming their next manager (Sun). Big Sam supported the club as a boy so it should be a perfect match… but then he also supported England as a boy.
