Gossip: Chelsea 'enter Bale race', Barcelona 'want Lemar and Alli', Bayern 'target £50m Dier'

Transfer wish: Antonio Conte wants Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale at Chelsea
Transfer wish: Antonio Conte wants Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale at Chelsea

“Aaaaarghh noooooooooooooon!” will be the blood-curdling cry emanating from Arsene Wenger’s kitchen this morning.

He hasn’t stubbed his toe on the dishwasher door, or run out of camembert, or found his wife watching that terrible Tim Lovejoy programme again.

He has merely picked up a copy of the Sunday Mirror and learned that three other teams have joined the race to sign Thomas Lemar, and one of them is Barcelona.

The Monaco winger, who Wenger has been trying to sign literally all summer, is now reportedly wanted by the Catalan giants, as well as their fellow Champions League contenders Manchester City and Liverpool.

It’s like when you a fancy a girl that nobody else likes but are too scared to ask her out, and then she loses four stone and gets a new haircut and suddenly every Tom, Dick and Harry is trying to get wid her.

After having three bids for Lemar rejected, the Mirror says Wenger is now prepared to offer £50m for the 21-year-old Frenchman. But given that Barca currently have £200m to play with (and Man City always have £200m to play with) that may not be enough. This is even worse than having to watch Tim Lovejoy.

Another team that may suddenly face competition for a top target is Manchester United, who the Sunday Express says will have to take on Chelsea to sign Gareth Bale.

The Blues have apparently emerged as “serious contenders” to sign the Welshman, who Real Madrid are allegedly willing to offload to make way for Kylian Mbappe.

Chelsea have not previously shown any interest in Bale, but Roman Abramovich would probably spend £90m on him just to get revenge on United for buying Romelu Lukaku. Petty, really.

£3,000-a-night hooker

It’s a worrying Sunday for Tottenham, whose midfielder Eric Dier is a £50m target for Bayern Munich, according to the Sun on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the amount of money in Barcelona’s coffers is also causing Spurs a problem, with the Sunday Express saying the north Londoners are “bracing themselves” for a Nou Camp bid for Dele Alli.

Having said that, there are only so many players Barcelona can buy with their Neymar windfall, and the Daily Star Sunday reckons they are planning to use £120m of it to seal a deal for Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.

The Spanish side are also being linked with Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri (Sunday Mirror) and Dortmund forward Ousmane Dembele (Metro), not to mention Mbappe. At this rate they will be bankrupt soon, like David James.

Elsewhere, a “mystery Chinese buyer” has expressed an interest in purchasing a substantial amount of shares in Man Utd (Sunday Times), Everton will make a £30m move for Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck if they fail to land his Gunners team-mate Olivier Giroud (Sunday People) and Man City have quoted Swansea a price of £13m to sign their former striker Wilfried Bony (Sunday Mirror).

But if that sounds like a bad deal, spare for a thought for Raheem Sterling, who the Sun on Sunday claims “had sex with a £3,000-a-night hooker” in Los Angeles and then sent her “angry WhatsApp messages about the price”. Perhaps this is something BBC One can take up in the next series of Watchdog.
