Crystal Palace - yes, Crystal Palace - is where we will begin today’s Hot Football Transfer Gossip, as the Sun reports that the Eagles are set to break their club transfer record for a second time this season. The man Alan Pardew is willing to splash out £15m on in January is Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi, although the south Londoners may face some stiff competition for the 22-year-old Belgian who has already been linked with half the clubs in the Premier League - most of them more prestigious than Crystal Palace. And also Chelsea.
The Blues also get a mention among today’s gossip musings in the Metro, which reports that one of Jose Mourinho’s targets - Jonathan Calleri - has “basically confirmed” his transfer exit from Boca Juniors. And that’s the wording they use in their actual headline - shocking. What the 22-year-old actually did was post a tweet saying “Thank you for everything and goodbye”, although that could just mean he’s going on holiday, or home for the day. As well as Chelsea, the Metro claims Tottenham and Arsenal are also interested in Calleri but that “Inter appear to be the front-runners”. Bet he goes to Inter. Waste of time, this one.
Marko Grujic is another chap who has been linked with most of England’s top clubs in recent months - and today it’s Liverpool’s turn. The Guardian reports that the 19-year-old Red Star Belgrade midfielder has confirmed that the Reds made an approach for him, but that he might not want to leave Serbia until the summer.
On the day that Arsenal face a crucial Champions League match against Olympiakos, it’s apt that David Ospina is being linked with a move away from the club. The Colombian goalkeeper, whose errors helped the Greek side win at the Emirates earlier this season, is close to completing a deal with Turkish club Besiktas, according to the Star. That deal might get even closer if Arsenal don’t prevail tonight.
Table-topping Leicester may attempt to bolster their title challenge (what? they’re top) by signing Birmingham’s highly rated winger Demarai Gray, reports the Mirror. The 19-year-old, who apparently has a £3.75m release clause in his contract, could be persuaded to leave the Blues in January due to their recent poor form. Bournemouth are also said to be interested in the teenager.
Elsewhere, Tottenham are leading the race to sign 18-year-old Walsall left-back Rico Henry, Kevin-Prince Boateng is set to rejoin AC Milan, and West Ham will not spend big in January despite the injury crisis that has deprived them of their entire attack. Good news for Nikica Jelavic.
