HOT FOOTBALL TRANSFER GOSSIP: Lukaku, Mahrez, Adebayor, Towsend

How people laughed when Everton, a club that never seems to have any money, splashed out £28m on Romelu Lukaku. It was like a single mother on benefits saving up for years and spending all her money on a yacht that she had nowhere to put and didn’t know how to sail. A useless, mindless extravagance that would confine her family to years of poverty for no reason. But nobody is laughing at Everton now, because their investment is paying off. Lukaku is now worth £17m more than what they paid for him.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, which reports that the Belgian striker is a target for Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain after an impressive start to the season in which he has scored eight goals already. Everton’s price tag of £45m is designed to ward off the vultures, but the Mail says Lukaku wants to play in the Champions League and that’s unlikely to happen at Everton. He may have to sign for Leicester instead.

Speaking of which, the Star reports that Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri has told in-form winger Riyad Mahrez to forget about a big-money move to Manchester United or Arsenal and concentrate on playing for Leicester instead. Which, when you think about it, is such an obvious position for Ranieri to take that it isn’t even worth repeating. Sorry.

Man Utd’s scouts have been busy this week. The Mirror reports that Red Devils employees were present at Valencia’s Champions League match against Gent to watch a trio of the Spanish club’s players: centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, left-back Jose Luis Gaya and midfielder Andre Gomes.

Meanwhile, the Star says United scouts were also at Rosenborg’s Europa League tie against Lazio to watch “a mystery player”. Maybe it was their former midfielder Ravel Morrison, who made his first start for the Italian club.

Rumours of Emmanuel Adebayor’s return to the Premier League are gathering pace, with Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores refusing to rule out a move for the former Tottenham man, reports the Guardian. “I love the players with talent, with hunger, with soul, and who is a very good person,” Flores added.

Arsenal are once again being linked with 21-year-old Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani, who Talksport says could be available for £15m.

And various teams are aiming to take advantage of Andros Townsend’s bust-up with Tottenham’s fitness coach, claims the Mirror. Newcastle are among the front-runners to land the winger in January but West Brom, Sunderland and Aston Villa are also reportedly keen, although their fitness coaches might not be.
