HOT FOOTBALL TRANSFER GOSSIP: Man Utd ‘want £51m Lewandowski’

Some accuse the Daily Star of being scattergun in its approach to transfer rumours, but in fact the tabloid’s gossip pages are guided by a complex Excel spreadsheet that informs its content producers how often they need to make up stories about Manchester United signing various world class players.

Ronaldo is allotted roughly five stories a month, evenly spread out, followed by Gareth Bale, Neymar and Thomas Muller with about three rumours each. And today it’s Robert Lewandowski’s turn. Which is quite exciting because the Polish striker only gets his time in the spotlight about once a month, so you’re quite lucky to catch it. It’s a bit like the Northern Lights. The Star says Lewandowski “is expected to the be the subject of an approach from the Red Devils soon”. Not sure when, just “soon”. He’ll cost about £51m. We’ll have more on this one in about four weeks’ time.

Another United target, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, will opt to stay with the Foxes in January, reports Sky Sports. Presumably he wants to be at a club that can make a serious challenge for the league title.

One player who looks certain to be on the move, according to the Liverpool Echo, is £5m Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Grujic. The 19-year-old will reportedly fly to Merseyside for his Reds medical this week, then return to Serbia on loan for the rest of the season. Apparently he is “like Steven Gerrard”, but with better grip on his boots.

Tottenham are planning to have another nibble at West Brom’s Saido Berahino in January, says the Telegraph. In true Daniel Levy style, they will try to get the Baggies striker cheaper than the £23m they offered for him in the summer, with a new figure of £15m being suggested.

An alternative attacking option for Spurs, according to the Mail, is former Man City striker Alvaro Negredo, who has only made five La Liga starts for Valencia this season and is currently being forced to listen to Gary Neville’s football analysis all day long. He’s up for it.

Elsewhere, Man City are keeping tabs on 19-year-old Serbian whizzkid/starlet/goal machine Andrija Zivkovic (the Mail), Southampton have joined Arsenal and Liverpool in pursuit of Charlton whizzkid/starlet/goal machine Ademola Lookman (News Shopper - whatever that is), and David Beckham wants to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his Miami MLS franchise (some Swedish paper).

Finally, in Hot Football Manager Gossip, the Sun reports that Roman Abramovich has said he will give Pep Guardiola “anything he wants” to take over at Chelsea next season. Except Champions League football, obviously.
