It’s hard to identify the exact moment when Arsenal ceased to be a major footballing force. Maybe it was the latest Champions League humbling by Bayern Munich; maybe it was when Arsene Wenger didn’t resign; maybe it was when William Gallas sat on the floor at Birmingham or when they signed Kim Kallstrom.

Or maybe it was today, when Manchester City reportedly swooped for Alexis Sanchez and offered the Gunners Jason Denayer in part-exchange.

In what would be one of the most patronising transfer proposals in Premier League history, the Sun claims Pep Guardiola has attempted to persuade Arsenal to part with one of the world’s best forwards by including in the deal a 21-year-Belgian who spent this season on loan at relegated Sunderland, where he spent most of his time either conceding goals or getting injured.

Is this what it’s come to, Gunners fans?

Yes, apparently, because Guardiola thinks using Denayer as a makeweight could “help to land Sanchez” due to Wenger’s previous interest in the dreadlocked centre-back who was twined up by Hal Robson-Kanu in Euro 2016.

These are also dangerous times for the Gunners’ north London neighbours, as Tottenham attempt to keep together their star-studded side without offering anyone a wage increase.

Chairman Daniel Levy’s strict salary policy will allegedly be “tested” by Manchester United, who the Mirror says are set to launch a £40m bid for Eric Dier. The Red Devils would also be prepared to offer the 23-year-old midfielder/defender a substantial hike on the £50,000-a-week contract he signed last September.

And while Spurs have insisted they will not sell any player they don’t want to, footballers have traditionally shown a certain interest in earning as much money as they possibly can…

One London club where you will not find problems, especially money ones, is Chelsea.

The Mirror says Roman Abramovich will offer manager Antonio Conte a “stunning new deal” to fend off interest from Inter Milan, as well as handing the Italian the funds for a “massive transfer splurge” likely to include Romelu Lukaku, Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Sanchez. (Although he might have to throw in Loic Remy as a makeweight to get the Gunners interested.)

Conte has also apparently asked Abramovich to get him £65m-rated Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata (Sun) and is “confident” of winning the battle to sign Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko (Mail).

Meanwhile, the Star has “exclusively” revealed that Man Utd will compete with the Blues to sign Lukaku, even though some other paper said the same thing two days ago.

West Ham have “no intention” of sacking manager Slaven Bilic and are planning to target Man City midfielder Yaya Toure on a free transfer in the summer, says the Telegraph. The “statement” presumably being that the Hammers still only sign top players when they are old.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are keen on former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah, who has improved immeasurably since joining Roma (Mail), Everton will “open talks” to sign Malaga’s 21-year-old striker Sandro and 24-year-old Ajax midfielder Davy Klaassen (Mirror).

Bordeaux’s Brazilian forward Malcom says he would consider a move to Man Utd (Metro). Even despite the danger that people in England will constantly insist on adding an extra L to his name.
