Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man City 'plot world record Alli bid', AC Milan 'want Sanchez and Lukaku', Arsenal 'target £40m Dembele'

It was Oscar Wilde, was it not, who wrote of the society that “knows the price of everything and the value of nothing”. Or was it Gerry Francis? Hot Football Transfer Gossip always get those two mixed up. Either way, it’s a timeless phrase that is brought to mind by a line in today’s Sunday Express.

According to the paper, “Manchester City could be tempted into doing business for Tottenham’s
Dele Alli if the bidding passes the £89m that Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba last summer”.

The implication here is that England’s wealthiest club would be more inclined to sign Alli the higher his price, especially if he costs more than a player their city rivals signed last summer.

Alternatively, this could be a printing mistake or just a badly written sentence, of which there are many in the Sunday Express. But anyway, the gist is clear: Man City want to buy Dele Alli and he will be expensive.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are said to have already registered their interest in the in-form Tottenham midfielder, but in Manchester “it is felt he could play a key part in bringing major honours to the Etihad Stadium for years to come”. See what we mean about badly written sentences.

Pep Guardiola is also flexing his financial muscle in the Sunday Mirror, which claims that City have “moved ahead of Real Madrid” in the race to sign Juventus forward Paulo Dybala. And when you move ahead of Real, that tends to put you in first place.

Juve would apparently “rather sell Dybala to the Premier League than La Liga”. Um… why???

We’re not given that information, although we are told that the Argentine has a release clause of £38.3m, of which City are only willing to offer £25.5m, which sounds remarkably tight by Etihad standards. Do you know what, this story is stupid.

Moving on, Serie A’s eighth-placed side AC Milan are giving it the big’un, “launching a huge money-is-no-object bid” for Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (Daily Star Sunday) and “plotting a £45m swoop” for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (Sunday Express). They’ve got new Chinese owners, see.

Speaking of which, Croatia’s former Blackburn striker Nikola Kalinic – now with Fiorentina – has revealed he turned down a £42.5m move to Chinese side Tianjin Quanjian in January, admitting he “isn’t worth the money anyway” (Mail on Sunday). Bet his club were really happy with him for doing that.

Arsenal are the latest club linked with a big-money move for free-scoring Celtic striker Moussa Dembele, with the Sunday Mirror tipping the Gunners to make a £40m bid for the 20-year-old Frenchman in the summer. It will be Man Utd’s turn to buy him next week – just you watch.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen’s Little Pea Javier Hernandez has been offered a £12m-a-year deal to join new MLS franchise Los Angeles FC (Sun on Sunday), Man City and Man Utd are battling to sign Monaco defender Djibril Sidibe (Manchester Evening News) and West Ham, who were yesterday linked with a move for veteran Man City right-back Bacary Sagna, have today been linked with a move for veteran Man City right-back Pablo Zabaleta (Sunday Mirror). Tomorrow, Paul Bosvelt perhaps?
