Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Man Utd ‘leading race for Lukaku’

Anderlecht, West Brom, Everton. These are the only three football clubs that Romelu Lukaku has ever scored a goal for, despite his reputation as one of the world’s biggest and baddest strikers. So it’s no surprise that he has expressed a desire to be playing Champions League football next season for one of the big boys. Why, then, does the Mirror think he is going to sign for Manchester United?

Admittedly, United still appear to have an outside chance of making the top four despite their extremely iffy season, but Lukaku will apparently have the choice of Europe’s top clubs this summer, with Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich all being linked. So piddling about in the Europa League at Old Trafford surely can’t seem that appealing.

Or can it? The Mirror says Everton, who are understandably desperate to keep the Belgian at Goodison Park, believe United are the front-runners to poach their prized asset, mainly because he would like to work with Jose Mourinho. Which is weird, because they already worked together once at Chelsea and Mourinho didn’t seem too keen. It’s also weird because Mourinho isn’t even United’s manager.

Similarly odd is a claim in French media that the Portuguese coach is going to sign Marseille midfielder Lass Diarra in the summer, irrespective of whether he has a job. To be fair, even if Mourinho doesn’t end up at Old Trafford, Diarra is a capable lad who would probably be useful for doing odd jobs around his house, like gardening or putting up shelves.

There’s some perturbing news for Arsenal and Everton fans in the Sun, which states that Liverpool are “leading the race” to sign Dynamo Kiev winger Andriy Yarmolenko. Anyone who has taken even the slightest interest in Hot Football Transfer Gossip in the past nine months will be aware that the Gunners and the Toffees have been fighting over the Ukrainian ace for ages, so it would be a bit of a liberty if Jurgen Klopp swanned in and bought him.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are plotting a £45m double swoop for Roma duo Radja Nainggolan and Kostas Manolas (Mirror), Barcelona are poised to make a £12m move for Man Utd defender Marcos Rojo (Sport) and Utrecht striker Sebastien Haller has emerged as a summer target for Tottenham (Standard).

Finally, another interesting Liverpool story in the Star claims that the Reds opted against signing Southampton’s Sadio Mane last season because an Anfield computer calculated that he wouldn’t be value for money. The club’s “internal data analytics” reportedly figured that the forward’s £11.8m price tag was too high. There are no further details on what this actually means, leaving us to assume that Brendan Rodgers was playing at lot of Football Manager during his time on Merseyside.
