Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Ronaldo 'wants Bale out', Ozil 'set for January Inter switch', Man Utd 'target Andre Gomes',

“Jose Mourinho believes he can resurrect the career of Andre Gomes.”

This is the interesting pull-out quote that appears half-way down the page in the Star’s story this morning claiming Manchester United are keen to sign the aforementioned Portuguese midfielder from Barcelona.

But who said it?

Sadly this must remain a mystery, because it’s the only “quote” in the whole article. It is not uttered anywhere in the main body of text, so attribution is impossible.

Instead it stands alone as a bold statement made by an unseen force – possibly a Star sub-editor, possibly Nicky Butt, possibly God himself. Who knows. And somehow this almost makes it more powerful.

The career of Andre Gomes certainly needs some resurrecting. In summer 2016 he moved from Valencia to the Nou Camp for £31m amid much fanfare; in summer 2017 his agent was trying – and failing – to seal him a deadline day move to West Ham. Falls from grace don’t get much steeper that.

But the player’s compatriot Mourinho could be the man to save him, according to that mysterious quote, and some other stuff in the article about Man Utd being keen to “exploit Barca’s desire to sell”.

A “January purchase” is predicted, which would be great news for Gomes providing he can dislodge Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini from Mourinho’s centre-midfield. Easy.

Ronaldo ‘wants Bale replaced’

Another midfielder whose career could do with a bit of resurrection is Mesut Ozil, but this looks increasingly unlikely to happen at Arsenal.

The Express says the Gunners have “given up” on getting the German playmaker to sign a new Emirates deal and could flog him to Inter Milan in January as a last chance to get some cash for him. Arsene Wenger has apparently “made peace” with Ozil’s departure, a process no doubt made easier by the fact he hasn’t got any assists or goals so far this season.

The Express also claims Real Madrid have been “constantly monitoring” Sadio Mane’s performances, which is bad news for Liverpool because the Senegalese forward has been playing very well. Bernabeu chiefs have been duly “impressed” and could swoop for the 25-year-old next summer.

Meanwhile, the Reds are among several clubs – also including Man Utd, Man City, Tottenham and Southampton – who are reportedly chasing 14-year-old Caen forward Elye Wahi.

The Sun describes the teenager as “the goal-scoring version of N’Golo Kante”. So, in other words, he is absolutely nothing like N’Golo Kante (although he does apparently comes from the same Paris suburb).

Elsewhere, Man Utd are poised to revive their interest in Monaco’s £52m-rated full-back/midfielder Fabinho in January (Calciomercato), Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang claims he was never interested in a summer move to the “unprofessional” Chinese Super League (Mail) and Cristiano Ronaldo has apparently told Real Madrid to drop Gareth Bale and give more playing time to Marco Asensio instead (Star). His next move is to start booing his Welsh team-mate during matches.
