Gossip: Man Utd 'target Bale and Varane', Chelsea 'want Dani Alves', Bayern 'confident of signing Alexis',

Varane, Dani Alves and Bale - on the move?
Varane, Dani Alves and Bale – on the move?

Poor Gareth Bale. On the biggest day of his season, as he fights to be fit for the Champions League final in his hometown city, he decides to unwind by treating himself to an English newspaper with no Spanish words in it. He can catch up on Jeremy Corbyn’s latest antics, find out what’s been happening in EastEnders, maybe even read his horoscopes or ogle at a semi-naked celebrity woman.

But instead, he has to see himself linked with a move from Real Madrid to Manchester United for the 712th time. Today of all days. It’s enough to make a man lose focus.

But this is no time for sentiment. Because there’s £87m burning an Antoine Griezmann-shaped hole in United’s pocket, and everything we thought we knew about this summer’s transfer window has been thrown into chaos. United must have a marquee signing, and that must always bring us back to Bale.

The Independent says Real are “willing to listen to offers” for the Welsh superstar, whose stock at the Bernabeu has swiftly fallen since he got injured and was replaced – with dashing efficiency – by Isco.

The paper adds that Bale has “told colleagues” he would be interested in a move to Old Trafford, while Real could also use him as bargaining chip in their pursuit of United goalkeeper David de Gea. A very expensive bargaining chip, mind. It’s believed United would not get much change out of £100m for the 27-year-old forward.

The Mirror presents an alternative set of events whereby Jose Mourinho pursues Real defender Raphael Varane in exchange for De Gea, rather than Bale. The Special One will reportedly have a “special eye” (presumably both his eyes are special) on Varane in tonight’s Champions League final as he mulls over a bid for the French centre-back.

Another attacker who remains firmly on Mourinho’s radar is Romelu Lukaku, who the Express says could be part of a swap deal that involves Wayne Rooney replacing him at Everton. United have reportedly offered the Toffees a “player-plus-cash deal”. But with Lukaku valued at roughly £90m and Rooney valued at roughly £0m, there could be a lot of cash involved.

Victor Moses’ bad fortnight has got worse with the news that Chelsea are targeting 34-year-old Juventus right-back Dani Alves. The Mail says the Blues “have been offered” the legendary Brazilian, who apparently has “an uncertain future in Turin”.

Bayern Munich are “growing increasingly confident” of signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this summer after holding “lengthy negotiations” with the Chilean forward, according to the Mirror. And Bayern are insufferably confident at the best of times, so one shudders to think what it’s like when they’re “increasingly confident”.

Alexis’ possible replacement at the Emirates – albeit not necessarily an adequate one – could be Riyad Mahrez, who the Leicester Mercury thinks could join the Gunners in a £50m deal.

Elsewhere, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are set to offer £30m for Celtic striker Moussa Dembele (Daily Record), Manchester City are “edging closer” to a deal for Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy (ESPN) and Liverpool have “priced Crystal Palace out” of a move for Mahmadou Sakho by demanding £30m for the defender (Liverpool Echo). The Eagles already made that mistake once with Christian Benteke.
