Hot football transfer gossip: Perdo, Otamendi, Berahino

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has not been shy in the transfer market since he was entrusted with the almost limitless kitty of Britain’s richest club. But this summer, one in which United have made a concerted effort to close the gap on Chelsea and Manchester City, the club’s net spend so far is just £13m. Less than Watford, Bournemouth, Leicester, Sunderland… we could go on.

But it’s not for want of trying, and that’s the sad thing. How United would love to be recklessly splurging £170m of the Glazers’ money on Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos and Harry Kane this week.

Instead, the two players United have earmarked £60m for - but are by no means guaranteed to secure - are Pedro and Nicolas Otamendi. Yeah.

They’re both nice players, of course. And Van Gaal is reportedly engaged in some pretty intense haggling with Barcelona over a player who can’t get in their team. The Catalans are demanding £21.3m up front for Pedro, but United would prefer to pay £3.6m of that in add-ons, the Daily Mail has dramatically reported.

Negotiations are simultaneously claimed to be taking place with Valencia about £35m-rated centre-back Otamendi, who Spanish media say has skipped training to ponder offers from United and Man City.

Another La Liga player who is said to be prepared to make the step down to the Premier League is Real Madrid’s Asier Illarramendi. The midfielder is set to sign for Liverpool, according to the Metro, although it’s unclear if they’ve stolen this rumour from somewhere else or made it up themselves.

Tottenham’s long-running pursuit of Saido Berahino is hotting up after Spurs managed to offload to Roberto Soldado to Villarreal in exchange for actual money. The Telegraph predicts that Mauricio Pochettino will splash out £15m on the West Brom forward at the next convenient moment.

West Ham are allegedly set to make a couple of experienced - possibly too experienced - signings, specifically Galatasaray’s 30-year-old, £6.4m striker Burak Yilmaz and QPR’s 35-year-old former Hammer Robert Green.

A player linked with the Hammers earlier this summer, Roma striker Mattia Destro, is now tipped to be joining Norwich City by the ever-reliable Norwich Evening News.

Everton are reportedly in talks with a centre-back, River Plate’s £5.5m-rated Ramiro Funes Mori, despite manager Roberto Martinez’s continued insistence that they are definitely not going to sell John Stones.

Finally, and least importantly, former Premier Leaguers Fulham want to buy Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace for £8m, which sounds like quite a lot of money but it’s up to them really.
