Hot football transfer gossip: Pogba ‘rejected’ £62m Chelsea move

There’s no denying there was a whiff of anti-climax about deadline day, but today’s hot football transfer gossip gives us a little glimpse into just how exciting Tuesday 1 September could have been. A parallel universe where Chelsea and Man Utd smashed their transfer records in a frenzy of late activity that left Man City quaking in their boots and made Arsenal fans even more angry. A day packed with deals so huge and shocking that no one even noticed Joleon Lescott.

It could have happened, but for a couple of small details. Italian media report today that Juventus actually accepted Chelsea’s £62m bid for Paul Pogba, but it was the Frenchman who rejected the move. The spoilsport.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that the club turned down a “sensational” bid for Thomas Muller from United. The Sun says the offer would have eclipsed the £59.7m the Red Devils paid for Angel de Maria, and that Louis van Gaal only turned to Anthony Martial after the bid for Muller failed.

So essentially it was Paul Pogba and Karl Heinz Rummenigge who ruined your deadline day and left you having to sit through West Ham buying player after player after player – none of them as good as Pogba.

Another sad story to emerge from last Tuesday concerns Everton’s pursuit of Slavic wingers. Having failed in their pursuit of Ukrainian wide man Alexiy Yarmoleko, the Star claims Toffees boss Roberto Martinez made Real Madrid’s Denis Cheryshev his main target. However, the Spanish giants blocked the move, meaning Martinez had to go and get Aaron Lennon again. Meanwhile Cheryshev, also apparently a target for Arsenal and Liverpool, is left kicking his heels around the Bernabeu waiting for Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to get injured.

There is also some Arsenal transfer news today, although admittedly it’s not that exciting. Talksport says that Gunners target Daniele Rugani, a 21-year-old Italian centre-back described as the new Alessandro Nesta, will be staying with Juventus, according to his agent.

And even less spectacularly, Brighton’s young midfielder Rohan Ince has ended speculation about a move to Liverpool by signing a new contract with the Seagulls.
