HOT FOOTBALL TRANSFER GOSSIP: Rooney to China, Ronaldo move ‘impossible’, Arsenal draw up shortlist

Whatever people say about Wayne Rooney, it cannot be denied that he has an interesting face. Part scally, part superstar, part village idiot, part badboy, part cherub, part Shrek, part hair transplant, it’s a face that tells a thousand stories. And according to the Sun, the next chapter for this famed countenance is to become “the face of China”.

Unlikely as it sounds, Rooney is reportedly wanted by Chinese Super League chiefs to be the highest-profile player in the revamped, cash-rich league, which is already populated by the likes of Robinho, Demba Ba, Tim Cahill and, err, Tobias Hysen. No particular Chinese club or transfer fee is mentioned by the Sun, although it’s probably fair to assume United won’t have too many other suitors willing to match the England captain’s £300,000 a week wages.

If Rooney does move east to become the “face of the game’s new global empire”, Louis van Gaal will not be replacing his captain with Cristiano Ronaldo, according to the Express. The paper quotes Ronaldo’s agent and lover Jorge Mendes as saying it is “impossible” that CR7 will end his career anywhere other than Real Madrid.

This hasn’t stopped the Telegraph claiming that Ronaldo might sign for Paris Saint-Germain, supporting its argument by declaring in its opening paragraph that “the European city with the largest Portuguese population outside of Portugal is Paris”. We kind of stopped reading after that.

Either way, United’s chances of landing Ronaldo seem slimmer today than they did a couple of days ago, so LVG is reportedly lining up other less prestigious targets. One of these is Fulham’s 19-year-old forward Moussa Dembele, says the Express, while another is Leeds United’s 18-year-old midfielder Lewis Cook. The latter teenager is also wanted by Liverpool, Stoke and Bournemouth, according to the Star.

Arsene Wenger now has so many injuries that he may be forced to break with tradition and splash the cash in January, says the Mail. Arsenal have reportedly drawn up a shortlist of potential replacements for crocked midfielder Francis Coquelin that includes Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender, Sporting’s William Carvalho, Seville’s Grzegorz Krychowiak, Lazio’s Lucas Biglia and Nice duo Nampalys Mendy and Vincent Koziello. Or Wenger might just save his transfer funds for another time.

The Gunners have also been linked by Italian media - not for the first time - with Inter striker Mauro Icardi, while Liverpool have once again been tipped by the Italians to make a move for Empoli star Riccardo Saponara.

Finally, the Sun are still milking on-loan West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini’s comments several days ago that it would be a “honour” to sign for Liverpool.
