Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Rooney ‘set for USA move’, Chelsea ‘want defenders’, Arsenal pursue ‘£25m Evans’

When David Beckham made his decision to quit playing proper football and go to the MLS instead, it was partly because he wanted be one of the beautiful people living in LA. So what would Wayne Rooney’s excuse be?

The Mirror seems to think the Manchester United striker’s move stateside could be imminent. And while these two England captains have been similarly decorated on the pitch, it’s hard to imagine anyone paying the Roonster to advertise designer sunglasses or pose in his pants.

Nevertheless, the American chap who the Mirror have spoken to reckons US clubs will be queuing up to throw “big dollars” at Rooney. And not in a lapdancer kind of way.

The chap, whose name is Merritt Paulson, believes the USA is a more attractive proposition than China - despite the “mega bucks” on offer there - because the air quality in somewhere like Beijing would be so bad that Wayne wouldn’t be able to breathe.

Meanwhile, Chelsea really really want to buy a centre-back. Sky Sports say the Blues have had a £30m bid for AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli rejected, the Telegraph reports that they are refusing to pay more than £40m for Napoli’s Kalidou Kouibaly and Football Italia claims they are also trying to sign Torino’s £25m-rated Nikola Maksimovic. All of which can’t make Gary Cahill feel very good about himself.

But the Blues’ desire for a solid defender is nothing compared to Arsenal’s, who are so desperate for one that they might be about to bid £25m for West Brom’s Jonny Evans, or so says the Telegraph.

If that doesn’t happen, the Mirror claims that Arsene Wenger could instead turn to Monaco’s Congolese centre-half Marcel Tisserand. The 23-year-old is also apparently wanted by Espanyol and Saint Etienne, so he must be top top drawer.

Santos striker Gabriel Barbosa is set to decide whether to sign for Manchester United, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid or Leicester now that Brazil’s Olympic campaign has finished, says the Express. The chance to play alongside Andy King could swing that one.

Elsewhere, Inter Milan have opened talks with Newcastle about signing Moussa Sissoko (Talksport), Everton have been put off Joe Hart because he is too expensive (Mail) and after spending the entire summer failing to buy a striker and then seeing all the strikers they do have get injured, West Ham have finally accepted the inevitable and turned to the name at the very bottom of their shortlist, Wilfried Bony (Gazzetta dello Sport).
