Gossip: Sandro 'snubs Chelsea', Mourinho 'angry with Man Utd', West Ham 'fail with double striker bid'

Alex Sandro was probably really excited to tell all his friends and family about his record-breaking summer move to Chelsea.

“I’m going to be the most expensive defender in the universe. I will be world famous, like George Clooney,” he would have told his mother as she welled up with pride.

“I’ll be able to have any woman I want in the world, but of course I will choose not to because I love my wife,” he would have told his friends, before noticing that his wife was listening.

It would be a momentous summer for Alex Sandro, and he sat back happily and waited for the sensational transfer stories to begin. But he soon noticed that something was amiss.

“Chelsea to buy Romelu Lukaku, Leonardo Bonucci, Alexis Sanchez… oh, and Alex Sandro,” declared the English papers. The Juventus left-back was never centre stage; he was always an afterthought.

Even when the Blues offered £60m for him – potentially making Sandro the costliest defender of all time – people seemed more interested in talking about Tiemoue Bakayoko, who was only worth £35m. How would Alex become more famous than George Clooney in this senseless media landscape?

Rival interest from Paris Saint-Germain was quickly drummed up to make the transfer seem more exciting. Maybe Sandro wouldn’t join Chelsea after all?

But then Tiemoue Bakayoko posted a load of Instagram videos of himself going clothes shopping in Paris, and Sandro was once again pushed into the sidebar.

And finally Sandro has had enough. If English people aren’t giving his transfer the status it deserves, he’s just going to stay at Juventus.

The Sun reports that the 26-year-old Brazilian is set to snub the Blues and sign a new £93,000-a-week contract in Turin. Yes, he could probably earn more than that by moving to Stamford Bridge. But forget it – it’s too late now.

Or is it? The Telegraph, which is generally more reliable than the Sun (although Del Boy Trotter’s three-wheeler is more reliable than the Sun), is still reporting that Sandro is set to move to west London as part of £125m triple swoop also involving Bakayoko and Roma defender Antonio Rudiger (Sandro gets third billing of the trio, naturally).

Just in case in at all falls through, the Sun says Chelsea have lined up Porto’s £22m-rated full-back Alex Telles as an alternative option.

Slow progress

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho is “getting angry” with the Manchester United hierarchy for failing to buy him any players.

The Express says the Portuguese coach has been given £200m to spend but is growing frustrated with the slow progress made in tying up deals for Alvaro Morata, Ivan Perisic and Nemanja Matic.

Mourinho will be even more annoyed by ex-Real Madrid coach Vicente del Bosque urging his former club to “call off” Morata’s proposed switch to Old Trafford (Express).

Even the news that United are keen to seal a £15m deal for Celtic’s 20-year-old left-back Kieran Tierney (Mirror) is unlikely to cheer up Mourinho that much.

West Ham have failed with separate £22m bids for two strikers, Cologne’s Anthony Modeste and Villareal’s Cedric Bakumbu, says the Telegraph. That means the Hammers have now unsuccessfully tried to sign every striker in the world.

Elsewhere, £70m-rated RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita has made a “personal agreement” to join Liverpool (Bleacher Report), Leicester will bide their time pursuing Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson while they wait for the Teessiders to lower his £25m price tag (Leicester Mercury) and Joe Hart could be forced to go on Manchester City’s pre-season tour despite Pep Guardiola having no use for him in his squad (Mirror). Maybe he could take up baking and supply the players and coaching staff with deliciously fluffy cupcakes after training. They’d love that.
