Gossip: Tottenham 'to re-sign £25m Sigurdsson', Mourinho 'targets Matic', Chelsea 'swoop for Alexis'

Matic, Sanchez and Sigurdsson - all set for summer moves?
Matic, Sanchez and Sigurdsson – all set for summer moves?

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s football career has so far been tremendously successful at every team he’s played for, except Tottenham. The lesson to take from this is either that he should avoid Tottenham, or that he should go back to Tottenham to rectify this one blemish on his CV, depending on your point of view. And the point of view of Mauricio Pochettino is, reportedly, that Gylfi should take the trickier option.

The Mail reports that the Spurs manager will make a £25m bid to re-sign the Swansea midfielder who left White Hart Lane in 2014 after a solid but unspectacular two-year spell in north London. The Argentine has since claimed the club made a mistake letting the Icelander leave, and now he wants to rectify it.

While it must be comforting for Sigurdsson to know that Spurs are keen to give him a second chance, he shouldn’t be too flattered because it appears they only reached this conclusion after working out that he was a lot cheaper than Ross Barkley.

The Everton playmaker looks poised to leave Goodison Park, and is a long-standing fixture on Tottenham’s wish list, but the 23-year-old Englishman is valued at £50m and Pochettino reportedly believes Sigurdsson is “better and cheaper”. Especially cheaper.

Tottenham’s hopes of keeping Eric Dier appear to have been boosted by Manchester United’s acceptance that the England man will be too difficult to prise away from White Hart Lane/Wembley/wherever.

The Manchester Evening News says the Old Trafford hierarchy believe negotiating with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will be “problematic” – which is a polite way of putting it – so they have switched their attentions to Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic instead.

Problems

Meanwhile, United boss Jose Mourinho will go “head-to-head” with his Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola to sign Benfica’s 23-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson, says the Mirror. Both managers have problems between the sticks, with David de Gea set to quit United and Claudio Bravo set to stay with City.

Alexis Sanchez is “increasingly likely” to sign for Chelsea this summer, according to the Independent, and he will presumably become even more increasingly likely to move to Stamford Bridge if Arsenal miss out on the Champions League this weekend. The Gunners, however, would reportedly prefer to let him leave for nothing next years that sell him to their London rivals.

Elsewhere, Man City are plotting an £80m double raid for Sporting Lisbon midfield duo William Carvalho and Gelson Martins (Sun), West Ham face competition from Everton to sign City striker Kelechi Iheanacho (ESPN) and, in a blatant attempt to have some Welsh mates to hang about with in Spain, Gareth Bale has advised Real Madrid’s board to sign Liverpool’s 17-year-old Wales striker Ben Woodburn (Don Balon). Next he’ll be telling Zinedine Zidane that James Collins is better than Sergio Ramos.
