Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Van Gaal, Mourinho, Teixeira, Griezmann, Benteke

You always know things are bad for Louis van Gaal on those days when the tabloids don’t even bother making up any rumours about Manchester United signing someone from Real Madrid or Barcelona. Instead, they are quite content to amuse themselves with the Dutchman’s epic woes.

But LVG is not getting sacked today. According to the Sun, he’s going to walk.

The manager is “on the brink of quitting” Old Trafford because he feels he has let the fans down, a conclusion he reached after hearing thousands of them swearing at him following Saturday’s home defeat to Southampton.

The Star reveals that some “showdown talks” are in the offing for Van Gaal today, during which he and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will “discuss his potential exit from his contract”. The paper reports that Woodward “looked on in horror as United fans abused Van Gaal” on Saturday, although sadly there are no photos of Woodward’s face “in horror” so you’ll just have to imagine what that looked like.

All this has made Jose Mourinho “increasingly optimistic” that he will be chosen to replace Van Gaal, reports the Times. United have apparently “held talks with Mourinho’s camp” and, although Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t sure about the Special One, Woodward quite likes him and the decision will be entirely his.

Mourinho’s former club Chelsea have been dealt a blow after the Atletico Madrid striker they want to buy, Antoine Griezmann, declared that he wants to remain in Spain, reports the Express. However, the Mirror has a completely different take on things, saying that Atletico have admitted they “face a fight” to keep the Frenchman amid interest from the Blues and both Manchester clubs. The Express reckons Griezmann would cost £75m, which sounds like rather a lot.

Another bit of mildly concerning news for Chelsea appears in the Star, which claims that Liverpool have agreed personal terms with Blues target Alex Teixeira. However, that won’t mean much until the Reds actually agree a fee with his club Shakhtar Donetsk, who the Liverpool Echo reports are still holding out for £13.5m more than the £24.5m the Merseysiders have offered.

One player who looks likely to leave Anfield is Christian Benteke, who the Bleacher Report predicts will be encouraged to seek pastures new after Euro 2016. Meanwhile, a player who still looks destined for Stamford Bridge is Alexandre Pato, who the Mail says will join the Blues on loan in the coming days.

Elsewhere, Watford are closing in on Fiorentina midfielder Mario Suarez (the Mirror), former Arsenal man Gervinho is set to move from Roma to Chinese side Jiangsu Suning (the Guardian) and Moussa Sissoko has hinted he could leave Newcastle in the summer (the Sun).

Oh and the Star reports that Chelsea have an option to buy Radamel Falcao at the end of the season for £38m. Would be funny if they did it.
