Gossip: Wenger 'targets Mahrez, Bacca and Lemar', Griezmann 'wants to leave Atletico', Liverpool 'get Van Dijk boost'

Arsenal transfer targets: Mahrez, Lemar, Bacca

Be afraid, Premier League. Wenger is staying, and he’s going to attack the transfer market like never before. The Star says the Frenchman will be handed a transfer kitty of £150m, which means he will be able to outspend the likes of West Ham, Stoke City and Southampton and secure the Gunners’ status as a top-seven club for the next two years at least.

Who will he sign with all this money? Well, with that kind of financial muscle the world is Wenger’s oyster, as long as it’s an oyster that doesn’t expect Champions League football.

The Mirror says the Gunners are targeting unsettled Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez, almost-31-year-old AC Milan striker Carlos Bacca and Thomas Lemar, the seventh-most-famous member of Monaco’s thrilling 2016/17 vintage.

Gary Lineker is unconvinced, apparently – the Match of the Day presenter telling BBC Radio 5 live that Arsenal are “further behind than Wenger thinks”. But what does he know – he’s just a leftie luvvie who feels compassion for refugees.

The rest of the football world, we’re sure, are quaking in their boots about Wenger’s war chest, which is why they are stepping up spending sprees of their own.

Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Antoine Griezmann after the French forward told Atletico Madrid that he wants to leave, reports the Telegraph.

Atletico will insist that United meet his release clause of £87m (which keeps getting higher because the stupid pound keeps getting weaker against the euro) but that doesn’t really matter because United would happily pay whatever the Spaniards want.

Interesting fact

Liverpool have been given some encouragement on Virgil van Dijk, who the Mirror claims is keen on working with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp. Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal are all trying to sign the £50m-rated Southampton defender, but the Dutch beanpole evidently thinks playing under Klopp would be funniest.

The Sun says the Reds have also offered a two-year contract to Man City’s Gael Clichy, which would make him the second left-back Liverpool had signed from City on a free transfer (after James Milner) in as many years. Which is possibly not an interesting a fact as Hot Football Transfer Gossip thinks it is.

Meanwhile, Chelsea want to replace No2 goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who has joined Bournemouth, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Areola (Sun). Which is funny because his name is like a nipple.

Elsewhere, Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez wants to sign his former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina from Napoli for £4m (Mirror), Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho will reject offers from PSG and Borussia Dortmund because he wants to stay in England (ESPN) and Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town want to sign out-of-contract Crystal Palace striker Fraizer Campbell (Sun). Be afraid, Premier League.
