Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Woodward ‘rejects LVG resignation’, Bale ‘scared’ of Man Utd move

There’s no point in Manchester United fans shouting at Louis van Gaal that he’s rubbish and he should leave anymore. He knows, and he’s tried to. But according to today’s papers, United won’t let him.

The Dutchman tendered his resignation after being booed off the pitch following Saturday’s home defeat to Southampton, reports the Sun. However, the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward allegedly persuaded the manager to stay, despite increasing discontent among the fans. Either Woodward still believes LVG is a genius, or he really really doesn’t want to appoint Jose Mourinho, or he’s half-way through season 4 of Breaking Bad and he’d much rather delay all this manager stuff until the summer.

The Mirror adds that there is a United “dressing room revolt” over Van Gaal, with Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini named as players “alienated” by their boss, but Woodward is ready to “defy an avalanche of public opinion” and keep faith with LVG.

Impressively, the Independent has managed to twist the LVG situation into a transfer story about Gareth Bale, who it says is being “scared off” a £100m move to Old Trafford by the turmoil over the manager’s future. This would imply that United had a chance of signing Bale in the first place, which the Independent seems to think they do, and they name the Welshman as the Red Devils’ “prime target this summer”.

The Guardian reports that LVG, having spent the last couple of days in Holland for his daughter’s birthday (bet he was on great form for that), will hold more talks with Woodward today. And unless the vice-chairman has watched 20 episodes on Breaking Bad in two days, the outcome is likely to remain the same.

In non-Manchester United news, Newcastle are close to reaching an agreement with Tottenham for Andros Townsend. The Guardian predicts that the winger will move to St James’ Park for somewhere between the £10m Newcastle offered and the £14m Daniel Levy demanded - a compromise having been sought by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino himself.

The Magpies also want to re-sign Loic Remy from Chelsea, but the Newcastle Chronicle says that move would be dependent on the Blues signing Alexandre Pato. Another striking option for Steve McClaren is Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette, who the Telegraph says has been making some “encouraging noises” about a move to the north-east. We’d love to hear what they sound like.

Elsewhere, West Ham have agreed personal terms with Nigerian striker Emmanuel Emenike (Evening Standard), West Brom are not interested in signing Mario Balotelli from Liverpool (Express and Star) and Sunderland are being linked with Roma striker Seydou Doumbia (Sunderland Echo).

But the hottest Hot Football Gossip about a Roma striker appears in the Sun, which claims that Juan Iturbe (currently on loan at Bournemouth) has “scored” with the daughter of Argentina legend Claudio Caniggia. She kind of looks the same as her dad but with much bigger breasts.
