The Hundred returns in 2022 after the inaugural edition of English cricket’s franchise short-format competition was held last year. Pre-tournament favourites Southern Brave became the first men’s champions, and will be hoping to again assemble a strong squad in the player draft. Teams were permitted to retain up to ten men’s players from 2021, negotiating new contracts during the retention window. After the retention period, there are 42 open spots across the eight teams to be filled in a snake-draft system held remotely.

Welsh Fire have the most spots to fill, with seven, while the defending champions and Trent Rockets have only four players to recruit. London Spirit have the top pick having finished last in 2021. Each team has a single “Right to Match” card that can be used to match the bid made by another outfit for a player under contract in 2021, provided they have a pick in the necessary salary band. 17 overseas and 25 domestic players will be slotted to teams during the draft, before squads are filled out by one overseas and one domestic wildcard in July.

While international commitments may impact on availability, there are a number of high-profile overseas stars likely to attract top-bracket attention – with David Warner, Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell chief among them. Batters Laurie Evans, who failed to agree a retention deal with the Oval Invincibles, and Joe Clarke could capitalise on strong winter performances and be high-ticket domestic options.

Could 17-year-old leggie Rehan Ahmed be a breakout player for the Southern Brave in 2022?

Birmingham Phoenix Men’s Squad for 2022 Hundred

15:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And completing the men’s squads for 2022, the Birmingham Phoenix currently look like this:

  • Chris Woakes (centrally contracted)

  • Jack Leach (centrally contracted)

  • Matthew Wade (overseas, £125,000)

  • Liam Livingstone (£125,000)

  • Olly Stone (£100,000)

  • Moeen Ali (£100,000)

  • Adam Milne (overseas, £75,000)

  • Benny Howell (£75,000)

  • Kane Richardson (overseas, £60,000)

  • Tom Abell (£60,000)

  • Matthew Fisher (£50,000)

  • Will Smeed (£50,000)

  • Chris Benjamin (£40,000)

  • Miles Hammond (£40,000)

  • Graeme van Buuren (£30,000)

  • Henry Brookes (£30,000)

Possible XI when all available: Wade (wk), Smeed, Ali (c), Livingstone, Abell, Hammond, Woakes, Howell, Milne, Richardson, Stone.

Lacking a frontline spinner and specialist finisher or two, but a side with plenty of potential. Benny Howell’s all-sorts will be used as an alternative to mystery spin through the middle alongside Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone, and at full strength the seam attack looks nice and complete. Could perhaps have favoured a power-hitting all-rounder to bat at six or seven instead of Kane Richardson.

Southern Brave Men’s Squad for 2022 Hundred

15:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There will be those two wildcards confirmed in July, but is the squad that will be bidding to defend their title in 2022:

  • Jofra Archer (centrally contracted)

  • Quinton de Kock (overseas, £125,000)

  • Marcus Stoinis (overseas, £125,000)

  • James Vince (£100,000)

  • Tymal Mills (£100,000)

  • Chris Jordan (£75,000)

  • George Garton (£75,000)

  • Alex Davies (£60,000)

  • Jake Lintott (£60,000)

  • Rehan Ahmed (£50,000)

  • Tim David (overseas, £50,000)

  • Ross Whiteley (£40,000)

  • Craig Overton (£40,000)

  • Joe Weatherley (£30,000)

  • Dan Moriarty (£30,000)

Possible XI when all available: De Kock (wk), Vince (c), Davies, David, Stoinis, Whiteley, Jordan, Archer, Garton, Lintott, Mills.

Again Mahela Jayawardene has assembled probably the favourites for the competition. The head coach must decide how to configure his batting order - Marcus Stoinis had had success up the order but more often plays a finisher role in the IPL and for Australia now. Likely number ten Jake Lintott opened the batting in the Bangladesh Premier League during the winter (to, it must be said, limited success) to illustrate the Brave’s batting depth, while when fit that bowling attack is a match for any in the world.

Dan Moriarty and Rehan Ahmed are unproven back-up spin options but have tremendous potential.

David Warner and Babar Azam among those unsold

15:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That is that, then, for now in the men’s Hundred draft, with only the overseas and Vitality wildcard picks left. Teams have, in most cases, prioritised availability throughout the tournament above higher-profile overseas names: David Warner, Babar Azam, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran and Mohammad Nabi are just some of those to not get picked up.

A pair of Australians added to Birmingham Phoenix roster

15:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Joining Adam Milne in the overseas group on the men’s side are Matthew Wade, who will almost certainly open up with Will Smeed and take the gloves, and Kane Richardson, who has value in his ability to bowl across the phases of an innings and likely availability durin the tournament.

Olly Stone has out-and-out speed and will hope for a clean bill of health after missing England’s winter with another untimely injury, and he is joined at Edgbaston by England newbie Matt Fisher. Graeme Van Buuren is an interesting cricketer who bowls left-arm spin and can hit a long ball. He had a tough 2021 with some confusion over whether he qualified as a domestic player at Gloucestershire, but is now a British citizen and will captain the county.

Olly Stone (Northern Superchargers)

Kane Richardson (O)

Matthew Fisher (Northern Superchargers)

Sophie Molineux completes overseas group at Birmingham Phoenix

15:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Just a couple of new signings for the Birmingham Phoenix women: Sterre Kalis has been leading the way for Dutch female cricketers for several years but is still only 22, while Sophie Molineux will be keen to put the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup triumph behind her. The Australian spinner is Phoenix’s third overseas.

Southern Brave’s women further strengthen powerful batting lineup

15:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Add Tahlia McGrath and Georgia Adams to an extremely strong list of batters at Southern Brave for 2022. McGrath offers some rather useful nagging right-arm seam, too, and should be riding high after an outstanding season in Australia as she joins Charlotte Edwards’ strong south-coasters. Adams has worked closely with the head coach as captain of the Southern Vipers - her signing makes a lot of sense, even if there is plenty of competition for top-order slots.

Tahlia McGrath (O)

Georgia Adams (Oval Invincibles)

Jo Gardner (Oval Invincibles)

Freya Kemp (Retained)

Ella McCaughan (Retained)

Quinton de Kock retained by Southern Brave

15:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Quinton de Kock is indeed back amongst things at Southern Brave in 2022, who make an intriguing four selections in the draft. Rehan Ahmed was arguably the standout performer for England’s Under-19s at the recent World Cup, showing impressive control of his leg-break and variations - Archie Lenham was a teenage leg-spin standout last year and Ahmed could replicate that sort of breakthrough season, if he gets an opportunity.

Dan Moriarty has plenty of admirers at the Oval and beyond with his accurate left-arm darts a calling card, and the Surrey tweaker could slip into the role filled by Danny Briggs for the Brave last year, while Hampshire’s Joe Weatherley knows the Ageas Bowl well.

Last picks of the day imminent

14:52 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That’s the announcement made for six teams, which means just two more franchises are left to confirm their April business ahead of the 2022 edition of The Hundred. Will men’s champions Southern Brave bring back Quinton de Kock? Who could fill the overseas vacancy at Birmingham Phoenix alongside Sophie Devine and Ellyse Perry?

The Hundred

Trent Rockets Men Full Squad for 2022 Hundred

14:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

As for the Trent Rockets men:

  • Joe Root (centrally contracted)

  • Dawid Malan (centrally contracted)

  • Tom Kohler-Cadmore (£125,000)

  • Rashid Khan (overseas, £125,000)

  • Alex Hales (£100,000)

  • Lewis Gregory (£100,000)

  • Colin Munro (overseas, £75,000)

  • Ian Cockbain (£75,000)

  • Marchant de Lange (overseas, £60,000)

  • Luke Wood (£60,000)

  • Samit Patel (£50,000)

  • Matt Carter (£50,000)

  • Steven Mullaney (£40,000)

  • Sam Cook (£40,000)

  • Luke Fletcher (£30,000)

  • Tom Moores (£30,000)

Possible XI when all available: Hales, Kohler-Cadmore (wk), Malan, Munro, Cockbain, Patel, Gregory (c), Khan, de Lange, Wood, Carter.

A top four all capable of opening up should ensure a fast start for Trent Rockets, and could be mixed and matched to complement one another’s strengths. It is a versatile group of bowlers will hope to draw upon knowledge of home conditions - Andy Flower has again looked to plenty of Nottinghamshire or ex-Notts bowlers - and build around the brilliance of Rashid Khan. Tom Moores may be included to take the gloves, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore has been working on his keeping to diversify his skillset, and it may be part of the reason why he commanded such a high price.

Oval Invincibles Men Full Squad for 2022 Hundred

14:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Still those two wildcard picks to be made, but here is how the bulk of the Oval Invincibles squad will look for the second edition of The Hundred (Men’s):

  • Sam Curran (centrally contracted)

  • Rory Burns (centrally contracted)

  • Sunil Narine (overseas, £125,000)

  • Jason Roy (£125,000)

  • Sam Billings (£100,000)

  • Tom Curran (£100,000)

  • Will Jacks (£75,000)

  • Saqib Mahmood (£75,000)

  • Rilee Rossouw (overseas, £60,000)

  • Reece Topley (£60,000)

  • Danny Briggs (£50,000)

  • Hilton Cartwright (overseas, £50,000)

  • Matt Milnes (£40,000)

  • Jack Leaning (£40,000)

  • Jordan Cox (£30,000)

  • Nathan Sowter (£30,000)

Possible XI when all available: Roy, Jacks, Cartwright, Rossouw, Billings (c, wk), S.Curran, T. Curran, Narine, Mahmood, Topley, Briggs.

Plenty of bases covered with a complete, quite well-rounded side, though may need one of the Currans, most likely Sam if not on Test duty, to step up as a more consistent finisher with the bat. With a number of domestic stars occupying the bigger price bands, Rossouw and particularly Cartwright are less flashy, but can play a variety of roles.

Megastar

14:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Trent Rockets Men go top-order heavy

14:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Four additions to the Trent Rockets squad, which is now chock-full of explosive batters who will enjoy the Trent Bridge surface and short square boundary. Tom Kohler-Cadmore spent a winter working on his game against spin in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and is another of the now plentiful free-scoring English opening batters.

Colin Munro had a good season for Manchester Originals last year and his usage will be interesting - more traditionally an opener, Munro has shown that he can bat slightly lower down, and may have to with so many options at the top for the Rockets. Ian Cockbain is a shrewd pick having found his groove in the shorter formats and starring for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash.

World Cup winning skipper Meg Lanning to call Trent Bridge home

14:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Big business for the Trent Rockets: Australia captain Meg Lanning, who withdrew from last year’s competition, has joined the Nottingham-based side. Alana King, breakout star of the Australian summer, is another addition from the World Cup winners, while Mignon Du Preez completes a strong set of overseas players.

Bryony Smith will be looking to reignite her international career after being away with England A in Australia, and is a very handy signing from Welsh Fire.

Champions Oval Invincibles bring in Lauren Winfield-Hill

14:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Having retained the strong South African group that helped lead them to victory a year ago, the women’s Oval Invincibles side did not have a spare overseas spot, but have capitalised on the availability of England batter Lauren Winfield-Hill to snare the opener at a reasonable price.

Aylish Cranstone swaps London franchises having not featured at the Spirit last year but gives the Invincibles a left-hand option, and all-rounder Emily Windsor and keeper-batter Kira Chathli have been added to a relatively settled side, too.

Oval Invincibles retain Sunil Narine as top overseas player

14:06 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Oval Invincibles continue to keep faith in the group that finished fourth in the inaugural edition of the men’s hundred, with Sunil Narine returning as the lead overseas choice. Rilee Rossouw is a well-liked left-handed top-order player who should be available for the entirety of the tournament, while Hilton Cartwright is a bit of a surprise choice to complete the overseas list, but coach Tom Moody has strong ties to Western Australia, where Cartwright plays his state cricket.

Left-arm spinner Danny Briggs feels a sensible signing after his release from the Southern Brave, and Matt Milnes and Jack Leaning have become very steady operators for Kent, and fill out the squad.

Next up...

13:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That’s us halfway there, then, in a big day of unveilings. Next on the agenda are the Oval Invincibles and the Trent Rockets, and we are about five minutes away from finding out who they have added for 2022.

On the move...

13:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Manchester Originals Men’s Squad in Full

13:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And as for the Manchester Originals...

  • Jos Buttler (centrally contracted)

  • Ollie Robinson (centrally contracted)

  • Andre Russell (overseas, £125,000)

  • Laurie Evans (£125,000)

  • Wanindu Hasaranga (overseas, £100,000)

  • Phil Salt (£100,000)

  • Daniel Worrall (£75,000)

  • Matt Parkinson (£75,000)

  • Sean Abbott (overseas, £60,000)

  • Jamie Overton (£60,000)

  • Tom Hartley (£50,000)

  • Tom Lammonby (£50,000)

  • Colin Ackermann (£40,000)

  • Wayne Madsen (£40,000)

  • Fred Klaasen (£30,000)

  • Calvin Harrison (£30,000)

Potential XI when all available: Salt, Buttler (c, wk), Evans, Ackermann, Lammonby, Russell, Overton, Hasaranga, Abbott, Worrall, Parkinson.

If Manchester Originals are to contend they may need some domestic signings like Jamie Overton and Tom Lammonby to kick-on, with the squad on paper lacking in proven middle-order franchise players and a consistent pace bowling enforcer. The strengths are clear, though, and considerable: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Laurie Evans is an extremely good English top three, Andre Russell speaks for himself and the dual leg-spin attack of Wanindu Hasaranga and Matt Parkinson should be mighty fun indeed.

Northern Superchargers Men’s Squad in Full

13:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Again, there will be two more wildcards added to this

Northern Superchargers Men’s Squad

  • Ben Stokes (centrally contracted)

  • Dwayne Bravo (overseas, £125,000)

  • Adil Rashid (£125,000)

  • Faf du Plessis (overseas, £100,000)

  • David Willey (£100,000)

  • Wahab Riaz (overseas, £75,000)

  • Harry Brook (£75,000)

  • Adam Hose (£60,000)

  • Brydon Carse (£60,000)

  • Matthew Potts (£50,000)

  • John Simpson (£50,000)

  • Roelof van der Merwe (£40,000)

  • Adam Lyth (£40,000)

  • Luke Wright (£30,000)

  • Callum Parkinson (£30,000)

Potential XI when all available: Lyth, du Plessis, Willey, Stokes (c), Brook, Simpson (wk), Bravo, Riaz, Rashid, Carse, Parkinson.

A deep batting lineup, but perhaps lacking in a dominant lower-order hitter - Bravo is best suited to a more limited role at this stage of his career. Equally, while there will be plenty of bowling options at the captain’s disposal, a second international class spinner could have been valuable - though there is a lot to like about Callum Parkinson, and van der Merwe has so much experience.

Manchester Originals’ new West Indian recruits on joining the team at Old Trafford

13:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Deandra Dottin: “I’m really excited to be joining Manchester Originals this summer.

“The first year of The Hundred was a breakthrough moment for the women’s game and it can go to another level this year.

“We’ve got some of the best players in the world and we want to make Emirates Old Trafford a fortress in front of our incredible fans.”

Andre Russell: “I’m excited to get across to the UK and get on the field for Manchester Originals this season.

“Emirates Old Trafford always has a brilliant atmosphere and the fans seem really up for it!

“I’m looking forward to joining the likes of Wanindu [Hasaranga], Jos [Buttler], [Phil] Salty and the rest of the guys and seeing what I can bring to the side.”

Jenny Gunn to call Headingley her Hundred home in 2022

13:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

On the women’s side of the franchise, much of Danielle Hazell’s squad was already in place ahead of the 2022 season, but the former England spinner has called in her long-time teammate Jenny Gunn to bolster the pace ranks at Headingley, a ground that Gunn knows well.

Spinner Lucy Higham is signed from Trent Rockets.

Dwayne Bravo drafted by the Northern Superchargers

13:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another West Indian all-rounder? Of course! As was anticipated, Northern Superchargers have looked to solidify their death bowling options for 2022 by taking Dwayne Bravo with their top draft choice. No cricketer has more T20 wickets than Bravo, whose wiles will be handy at Headingley.

New head coach James Foster has favoured experience elsewhere, too, with Wahab Riaz left-arm pace a useful complement for Bravo, and Luke Wright one of the most consistent players at the top of the order in the shorter formats for more than a decade. Roelof van der Merwe has no shortage of games at the highest level, either.

Deandra Dottin the marquee signing for Manchester Originals Women

13:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Continuing the theme of West Indian all-rounders, Deandra Dottin has signed for the Manchester Originals after being based at the London Spirit last year. She will be joined by experienced middle-order batter Amy Satterthwaite of New Zealand, who is set for a first appearance in The Hundred. Phoebe Graham, stalwart of the domestic scene in England, was rewarded with a professional contract at the North West Thunder during the winter and comes over to Manchester in The Hundred, too.

Manchester Originals add Andre Russell with top bracket men’s draft pick

13:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Andre Russell will be plying his trade at Old Trafford in The Hundred next summer, joining a power-packed batting order also bolstered by the addition of Laurie Evans.

Wanindu Hasaranga has also been drafted - the Sri Lankan is a real emerging all-round superstar, outstanding in the field, more than handy with the bat and now a top leg-spinner. Australian Sean Abbott completes a complement of overseas all-rounders and should take the new ball, while compatriot Daniel Worrall qualifies as a domestic player.

12:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And here are a few potential storylines to look out for.

The key talking points ahead of the start of the County Championship campaign

County Championship starts this week

12:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The domestic summer has already begun, of course, with the 18 counties and the university sides engaged in preseason fixtures in slightly uncomfortable early spring conditions over the weekend. The action proper kicks off with the first round of County Championship fixtures from Thursday morning - and the Press Association have picked out five players to watch:

And now over in Cardiff - here’s the full list of Welsh Fire’s retentions and draft choices:

Matt Critchley (£40,000)

Ryan Higgins (£40,000)

Jacob Bethell (£30,000)

Josh Cobb (£30,000)

Possible XI when available: Bairstow (c, wk), Banton, Clarke, Duckett, Miller, Critchley, Higgins, Zampa, Ball, Payne, Shah.

An extremely strong domestic top order, intriguingly all capable of donning the gloves, but may be reliant on a resurgence from Miller and breakouts from Critchley and Higgins to provide death overs power. Could therefore be versatile with the batting order. Lacking a finger-spinner, maybe.

London Spirit Men’s Squad

12:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There are still two more wildcard picks to be made this summer ahead of the tournament, but here is how the men’s squad at Lord’s is shaping up ahead of 2022.

Welsh Fire bring back Tom Banton and add Joe Clarke to men’s team for 2022

12:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another year, another loaded top order for Gary Kirsten to work with at Welsh Fire. Joe Clarke was a likely marquee pick after leaving the Manchester Originals, but the Cardiff franchise have also somewhat surprisingly opted to bring back Tom Banton, leaving no shortage of top order options when Jonny Bairstow is available. Youngster Jacob Bethell was a star of England U19 World Cup runners up and is considered a real gem at Warwickshire, with the Barbados-born southpaw not lacking in confidence or ball-striking ability.

Sam Hain could be a steady middle order hand, though he has worked to up his strike-rate in the shorter formats, while David Miller adds an experienced finisher. The other overseas recruits are leg-spinner Adam Zampa and Naseem Shah, one of a glut of young Pakistan pace bowlers. He’ll be playing county cricket over the border at Gloucestershire this summer.

Tammy Beaumont to captain Welsh Fire in 2022

12:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Leaving the London Spirit is England opener Tammy Beaumont, who has been lured to Cardiff to captain the Welsh Fire. Also joining the team is Rachael Haynes, who can be used at the top or, as she is for Australia in T20 internationals, in the middle order, and her fellow World Champion Annabel Sutherland, who has shown such potential and versatility with her seam bowling and rounded batting skill.

Fran Wilson has retired from international cricket but is a smart signing and a tone-setter in the field, while Scotland’s Sarah Bryce could take the gloves and provides another top-order option. Alex Hartley is another former World Cup winner added, with her left-arm spin complementing what should be a strong attack of tweakers at Sophia Gardens.

Beth Mooney (O – Welsh Fire)

Amelia Kerr (O – Southern Brave)

Megan Schutt (O)

Sophie Luff (Welsh Fire)

The London Spirit have also confirmed four signings for the women’s half of the franchise. Batter Beth Mooney arrives after an outstanding World Cup for Australia and adds a high-quality, versatile top order option for England captain Heather Knight at Lord’s, while her international teammate Megan Schutt will lead the attack as one of the world’s best swing bowlers.

Amelia Kerr had a phenomenal summer season in New Zealand after taking a break for the game, establishing herself as probably the top leg-spinning all-rounder option. Finally, Sophie Luff is a consistent domestic run scorer who arrives from the Welsh Fire, where she was captain - four very, very sensible additions by coach Trevor Griffin, who has worked with Luff at the Western Storm.

London Spirit select Kieron Pollard with top pick of 2022 Hundred Draft

12:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A simple choice - one of the most devastating power-hitters in the world and a character of such experience, knowledge and leadership who will add plenty to London Spirit’s middle order.

The Hundred 2022

11:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Women’s picks also set to be announced

11:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The assembly of the women’s Hundred squads works differently to the men’s, with no draft and instead an open recruitment process. London Spirit and Welsh Fire will be announcing their recruits in about five minutes’ time for both the men’s and women’s side - after most first-choice Australian players pulled out last year, which of Meg Lanning’s newly-crowned World Cup winners will find new homes for 2022?

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do the Southern Brave need?

11:52 , Harry Latham-Coyle

As could perhaps have been predicted, the defending champions in the men’s Hundred have retained much of their squad. Tim David has established himself as a globe-trotting power-hitting superstar since playing only briefly in last year’s edition and has been kept on, and Marcus Stoinis will make his debut after missing out last year. Quinton de Kock could be brought back either with Southern Brave’s first pick or using the RTM card to complete the first-choice overseas group.

Three left-arm orthodox spinners were let go, so a player to fulfil that role is likely to be one of four draft choices this afternoon.

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do the Birmingham Phoenix need?

11:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The Birmingham Phoenix have favoured a phalanx of power-hitters and handy all-round options, with data analyst Dan Weston influential. A partner for Will Smeed at the top of the order is a likely recruit unless Moeen Ali is pushed up, while a spinner to complement Moeen and Liam Livingstone may be targeted. The squad looks short of a left-arm seamer, so expect to see one added in the draft.

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do the Trent Rockets need?

Trent Rockets’ men require only four players having largely kept faith with last season’s group. Dawid Malan is one of their Test contracted assignees but now out-of-favour with England, which is valuable. Depending on the desired role for Mala, Trent Rockets may seek an overseas opener to partner Alex Hales or a middle-order player to slot in at three or four.

Rashid Khan could miss parts of the tournament playing for Afghanistan, so a reserve wrist-spinner may be useful.

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do the Oval Invincibles need?

11:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another strong team on paper entering the draft, the Oval Invincibles are widely tipped to use their “right-to-match” card to bring back Sunil Narine and fill one of their overseas slots. The likely departure of Laurie Evans is a blow, even if he was never quite used to his full potential. The domestic pace attack is one of the strongest in the competition already but Sam Curran and Saqib Mahmood may both be eyeing Test call-ups, so some cover may be useful.

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do the Northern Superchargers need?

11:29 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There was a lot to like about the Northern Superchargers’ squad for the 2021 edition of The Hundred (Men’s), even if they fell short of the play-offs. In Adam Lyth, Faf du Plessis, Harry Brook, David Willey, John Simpson, Brydon Carse and Adil Rashid they have kept faith in a strong spine, with du Plessis’s likely availability good news after missing last year’s tournament with concussion.

James Foster has taken the reins at Headingley and a death bowler is almost certainly in his thinking early on, while a left-handed middle order ball striker to cover for Ben Stokes would be useful, even if the versatile Willey can fulfil a variety of roles. A spinner, too, may be added to combine with Rashid and Callum Parkinson.

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do the Manchester Originals need?

One side unlikely to be looking for top order batters are the Manchester Originals, with Jos Buttler and Phil Salt a potentially dominant opening pair who are now teammates at Lancashire after Salt’s offseason move north. The Originals also have a strong domestic spin bowling corps led by Matt Parkinson, and thus should seek overseas pace bowlers and middle order hitters. Andre Russell could be a target to fulfil both roles.

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do Welsh Fire need?

11:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Welsh Fire never quite translated their supreme batting potential into consistent performances last year, and have released Tom Banton ahead of 2022. With Jonny Bairstow now looking more and more likely to be an England Test regular, a potential captain who bats in the top-order may appeal early on. Welsh Fire have four of the first 16 picks so have the ability to draft significant top-end talent - and coach Gary Kirsten is targeting a rounded squad.

“The key to these short format tournaments is having guys that you feel, on their day, can really contribute to the success of the team,” Kirsten said to the BBC.

“I think if you’re relying on just one, two or three players you can get into trouble.”

Though all-rounder Matt Critchley is a very useful option, a top-class wristspinner could also be high on the list of targets.

The Hundred Draft 2022: What do the London Spirit need?

11:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Like most of the tournament’s key personnel, Trevor Bayliss is in India for the IPL as he assembles his London Spirit men’s squad for 2022. He faces a tough task to improve last year’s bottom-placed finishers, who have plenty of holes in their squad.

They are expected to use their first pick on Kieron Pollard, adding significant punch to a middle order that will also include Glenn Maxwell and experienced options in Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara. A high-quality domestic opener would be useful with Zak Crawley likely to miss parts of the tournament while on Test duty, while a lead quick bowler plus a left-arm spinner with the ability to bowl in the powerplay could help balance an attack short of proven options beyond the developing Mason Crane.

The Hundred 2022: Trevor Bayliss replaces the late Shane Warne at London Spirit

The Hundred: The hits and misses of the first edition of tournament

10:01 , Jack Rathborn

The first season of The Hundred is in the books more than three years after the idea of introducing another format into the domestic structure was first pitched by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Since its inception, the 100-ball competition designed to bring in new supporters to the game has divided opinion sharply among its existing fanbase, so has the past few weeks done anything to alter mindsets?

Here we look at what has and has not worked from the inaugural edition of the ECB’s brainchild.
