Hungary's captain Dominik Szoboszlai was left in tears after witnessing his teammate Barnabas Varga suffer a horrific injury following a brutal collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The shocking incident took place as Hungary tried to make the most of a free-kick, with Gunn jumping over Varga. It appeared that Varga crashed into Gunn's arm and was left lying motionless on the pitch.

The referee immediately stopped the game, signalling for medical staff to sprint onto the field, as urged by the Hungarian players. Varga was quickly put in the recovery position, and screens were erected around him while he received medical treatment.

The Hungarian team, worried for their teammate, implored the stretcher-bearers to speed up their entry onto the pitch, with Varga clearly in severe pain. The grim atmosphere affected the entire Hungarian squad, with pictures showing captain Szoboszlai shedding tears.

After a six-minute delay, Varga was taken off the pitch to a standing ovation from the crowd at Stuttgart Arena. The host broadcaster decided to show only one replay of the collision, while VAR carried out a review for a potential penalty against Gunn.

However, the VAR check ended without any penalty being given, and the match resumed with Hungary scoring right at the death to clinch third place in Group A. Former Scotland player Pat Nevin spoke about the incident during his BBC 5 Live broadcast, defending Gunn's actions as unintentional.

Footie pundit Nevin said : "We have seen it before if a keeper comes out and he doesn't get the ball but takes a player it is a foul. I actually think Angus Gunn got some of the ball there."

Following his team's clash with Scotland, Varga saw an influx of support across social media platforms. The player had been instrumental in Hungary's performance in their last two group stage matches.

Against Switzerland, he saw 90 full minutes on the pitch resulting in a loss, followed by a strenuous 87-minute run in the defeat against Germany. Going into Sunday's decider, three points were crucial to harbour any hopes of advancing to the knockout stages.
