England have slumped to yet another heavy defeat, this time collapsing in a run chase as India claim victory by 100 runs to maintain their flawless start to their Cricket World Cup.

The defending World Cup champions have lost four matches in a row, are all but eliminated and had no answers to the bowling of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. They both starred in the powerplay as England collapsed from 30 without loss to 39 for four and were unable to recover and even get close to the total.

India, meanwhile, have been outstanding, Rohit Sharma’s side have won every game to justify their position as favourites with real quality and depth with the bat and ball.

Liam Livingstone top-scored with 27 in a sorry-looking scorecard for England, but that should take nothing away from India who were exceptional.

The hosts all but secured their place in the semi-finals with a win and maintained the form shown in the win against 2019 runners-up New Zealand. Follow all the updates from the match below and the latest tips and betting preview here.

India beat England by 100 runs

16:44 , Karl Matchett

Here is a match report from Lucknow:

England were counting the cost of their worst ever World Cup campaign after they flopped to a fifth defeat in six games against hosts India.

Despite a rocky history in one-day cricket the defending champions of 2019 have plumbed new depths over the last four weeks, racking up their most losses at a single tournament and an unprecedented sequence of four-in-a-row.

A 100-run thrashing in Lucknow, where they were skittled for a paltry 129, leaves them rooted to the foot of the table in 10th place and on course to embarrassingly miss out on the 2025 Champions Trophy.

England count cost of worst-ever World Cup after 100-run defeat to India

16:24 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes: “I don’t think we’re embarrassed because you put yourself out there to be judged every day in training and performing for England, we’re over the moon to be able to put the shirt on.

“I think frustrating is the right word for it, because there are world-class players in there who have done it in world cups before, it is hard to put your finger on why such a talented group of players haven’t been able to put it right.”

Woakes added: “We’ll be turning up to every game from now on trying to win. 2015 was a low point back then I thought we were playing an old-school brand of cricket.

“At the moment we’ve not got the confidence in winning games of cricket.

“If you could bottle that up you could see a whole different team turn up against Australia.

“At the half way point the confidence was there and the feeling that we could go and do well, but we didn’t.”

16:20 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes continued: “I think if we could buy some confidence at the minute we’d spend a lot of money.

“When you’ve not got confidence you can play some bad shots, I think Ben was trying to counteract Shami by playing some more attacking shots but that didn’t work out.

“First and foremost we need to build partnerships to get close to that score on what was a difficult pitch and we couldn’t do that.”

On confidence loss: “I think that’s top elite level sport, you have no god-given right to perform at this level, World Cups are incredibly hard to win, some of us were here in 2019 and 2022.

“You have to have every part of your game ticking, and for us it’s been the whole team has not played well.

“It’s certainly low in the dressing room.”

16:17 , Sonia Twigg

Chris Woakes to Sky Sports: “Disappointing again I suppose, at the half way stage we thought we were in a good position.

“We haven’t performed as well as we’d like with the ball in this tournament so it was nice to put that right and we fielded exceptionally as well.

“The wicket wasn’t easy to bat on but under the lights it felt a bit easier. From 30 for none and losing two in two balls and then another couple and it’s hard to come back from that.”

India beat England by 100 runs

16:13 , Sonia Twigg

Jasprit Bumrah to Sky Sports: “I was not thinking about the hat-trick but just trying to be in the moment and think what was working for me.

“We anticipated the new ball would do something, we knew that when the temperature falls down there might be a little bit of help with the swing.”

On Shami: “He’s outstanding, all the legends I feel like he’s always been quite calm, but the way that he was bowling it was like he was playing a Test match, I am really happy with the way that he was going.”

India beat England by 100 runs

16:11 , Sonia Twigg

Rohit Sharma: “It’s not something that you see every day, when you have a pair like that you know when you start your innings that you have to take two wickets and when you have them you can put pressure back on the batters.

“They exploited the conditions pretty well and I thought they put the ball in the right areas.”

On his bowling attack: “We’ve got a good balance there, a couple of good spinners and the seamers have a lot of experience of playing in this conditions, if I look a the options I have when it comes to bowling I have a fair bit.

India beat England by 100 runs

16:08 , Sonia Twigg

Jos Buttler continued: “Some top players and we’re a long way short of our best.

On the bowling innings, he said: “It was excellent, a great start in the powerplay, the guys found some movement and there was a bit of bounce, the ground fielding was as good as it’s been, today felt like a day it was all turning round, but the way we batted we didn’t bat that up.

On the Champions Trophy going to the top eight teams: “We’re aware of that and it just proves that we have a lot to play for.”

India beat England by 100 runs

16:06 , Sonia Twigg

Jos Buttler: “Very disappointed, I think at the half way stage chasing 230 we fancied ourselves and same old story.

“A gut feel that we wanted to chase, that was the best we’ve been with the ball in the tournament.

“Personally I felt like i wanted to soak some pressure up and come through that phase, but it’s about executing your skill, at that stage there wasn’t scoreboard pressure, but we’re just falling short whichever way we’re doing it at the moment.”

India beat England by 100 runs

16:00 , Sonia Twigg

India return to the top of the table with six wins from their six matches, South Africa might have a higher net run rate, but if the host nation keep winning all of their matches, it will not matter and they will finish top of the standings.

India beat England by 100 runs

15:59 , Sonia Twigg

Rohit Sharma on the first innings: “Obviously I’ve got the experience to bat in this situation as well, it’s not just about going and playing shots.

“I still felt like we were 20 or 30 runs short when we finished the innings but it was a good game today.

“The new ball was a bit challenging and then as the game went on the ball got softer, it was not easy to rotate the strike, but we just had to keep digging.

“I’ll take that win any day.”

Wicket! Wood out for 0! England bowled out for 129

15:52 , Sonia Twigg

Willey has hit another six! And why not, just go out there and play shots, any chance of England getting near the total has gone a long time ago.

Bumrah will be annoyed he has been hit for two sixes, but in the end it is likely to matter little.

Wood can also give it a hit, he scored 42 in a similarly losing cause against South Africa including some massive sixes, and it might give the smattering of England fans in the crowd something to enjoy.

And he can’t, he was bowled by a full straight delivery from Bumrah.

India win by 100 runs.

Wicket! Rashid out for 13! England 122-9

15:46 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid has tucked one away for a boundary off his legs. He had to be alert later in the over to just fend one off his body.

Has got Rashid to play at these, but there were also two successive wides. He follows it up with a strong drive.

Shami strikes next ball, Rashid is clean bowled and he has been excellent this evening.

England 111-8 (33) Willey 9, Rashid 4, Bumrah 2-24 (6)

15:40 , Sonia Twigg

Willey has smashed a massive six! He has got hold of that perfectly and it was a wonderful shot off Bumrah who has been brought back on to wrap things up as quickly as possible.

Michael Atherton explaining that England’s performances has taken everyone aback and that the pundits have been “astonished” by the manner of Jos Buttler’s side’s defeats.

Both Rashid and Buttler have plinked the ball upwards only to watch it fall safe, seven from the over.

England 104-8 (32) Rashid 4, Willey 2, Kuldeep 2-25 (8)

15:36 , Sonia Twigg

Kuldeep keeps going and it feels like another breakthrough could happen any ball.

It’s hard to explain what has happened to England, this is the same squad and the same players (mostly) who have won two World Cups, and one as recently as last year.

England 102-8 (31) Willey 1, Rashid 3, Jadeja 1-16 (7)

15:33 , Sonia Twigg

Another maiden. I’m not even sure what England try and do from here.

England 101-8 (30) Willey 1, Rashid 2, Kuldeep 2-22 (7)

15:30 , Sonia Twigg

England have the 100 up, at one point that looked impossible and I guess this is a situation where you have to take any positive however small, and there have been very few in this innings.

Wicket! Livingstone out for 27! England 98-8

15:26 , Sonia Twigg

Kuldeep will continue and has his man! Livingstone has been struck on the pads and the umpire has given it!

Livingstone has done what he can and reviewed it, but he did not look confident. three reds and he is gone!

England 98-7 (29) Livingstone 27, Willey 0, Jadeja 1-15 (6)

15:24 , Sonia Twigg

David Willey has come to the crease and has started to block Jadeja.

The Woakes wicket was his first of the match and he will have a wicket maiden.

Wicket! Woakes out for 10! England 98-7

15:19 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes had been so sensible, but he has come down the wicket and misread it and Jadeja has fired it a bit quicker and wider and he has been stumped!

India 98-6 (28) Livingstone 27, Woakes 10, Kuldeep 1-19 (6)

15:17 , Sonia Twigg

Kuldeep will come back on. While net run rate might not matter for England, it will matter to India, who will want to keep their hold at the top of the standings table.

Livingstone has gone for a slightly risky drive to a full ball but gets away with it.

Woakes hits a single from the final ball to move into double figures.

England 94-6 (27) Livingstone 25, Woakes 8, Jadeja 0-15 (5)

15:13 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes and Livingstone have just managed to rotate the strike a bit more against Jadeja, three runs from that over.

England 91-6 (26) Livingstone 23, Woakes 7, Shami 3-12 (6)

15:10 , Sonia Twigg

A murmer of excitement when England race through for a single.

Shami has continued to bowl, and starts the over with incredible figures of three for six from his five overs before this one.

Woakes has his first boundary with a lovely lofted shot into the off side.

Seven from that over, by far Shami’s most expensive.

England 84-6 (25) Livingstone 22, Woakes 1, Jadeja 0-12 (4)

15:05 , Sonia Twigg

Another over where England are just hanging on. Lots of defending and not many runs, three runs from it.

England 81-6 (24) Livingstone 20, Woakes 0, Shami 3-5 (5)

15:02 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes defends down the ground first ball. And has successfully seen out the end of the over.

Liam Livingstone could count himself lucky after he was struck on the pad, not given and India chose not to review, had they done he would have been out.

That is a wicket maiden for Shami who has been unplayable here.

Wicket! Ali out for 15! England 81-6

14:57 , Sonia Twigg

England have a new problem to contend with here, Shami is back into the attack and strikes immediately.

Moeen Ali has edged behind outside the off stump!

Shami has another and England are floundering.

England 81-5 (23) Ali 15, Livingstone 20, Jadeja 0-9 (3)

14:55 , Sonia Twigg

Jadeja has continued to keep things tight here and cause problems.

But Ali and Livingstone have kept going and plugging away at this total.

England 79-5 (22) Ali 14, Livingstone 19, Kuldeep 1-15 (5)

14:51 , Sonia Twigg

The first stroke of fortune for England, a miss-field brings a four and with that Livingstone has passed Malan’s total of 16 to become the highest scorer in this innings.

England 72-5 (21) Ali 13, Livingstone 13, Jadeja 0-6 (2)

14:48 , Sonia Twigg

Jadeja really does rattle through his overs, he bowls quickly, some were almost 60mph.

After 20 overs England will just have to question how they’ve yet again got themselves in this situation.

Four runs from the over, and if they can survive for a bit there is so much time left in this match.

England 68-5 (20) Ali 11, Livingstone 11, Kuldeep 1-8 (4)

14:44 , Sonia Twigg

Livingstone was completely undone by that last delivery, it beat the inside edge and just missed the stumps, that was a beautiful delivery.

England 67-5 (19) Ali 10, Livingstone 11, Jadeja 0-3 (1)

14:41 , Sonia Twigg

Jadeja has been brought on after Siraj was unable to find a breakthrough.

Again it was a tight over, just as expected from the spinner, and just the three runs from it.

England 64-5 (18) Ali 9, Livingstone 9, Kuldeep 1-7 (3)

14:38 , Sonia Twigg

Kuldeep, who extinguished any residual hopes that England might salvage the situation when he took the wicket of Buttler, is back on for his third over.

Kuldeep has bowled another tight over, just three from it.

England 61-5 (17) Ali 8, Livingstone 7, Siraj 0-33 (6)

14:35 , Sonia Twigg

It’s hard to even know where England go from here other than just stay in damage control and try and do the best they can.

The slip is back in for Livingstone, Siraj is still without a wicket but must be fancying his chances here.

Livingstone has a boundary with the final ball of the over! I can’t remember quite how long it’s been since the last one.

Wicket! Buttler out for 10! England 52-5

14:26 , Sonia Twigg

Kuldeep strikes! And that’s the last big wicket left!

Buttler has played all around that which jagged back in a long way and onto the stumps.

There was turn and bounce and England are becoming undone.

England 51-4 (15) Buttler 9, Ali 6, Siraj 0-25 (5)

14:24 , Sonia Twigg

Ali and Buttler are in survival mode here and that’s exactly what the situation has called for.

Five runs from that Siraj over and no risks taken more importantly.

England 47-4 (14) Buttler 6, Ali 5, Kuldeep 0-2 (1)

14:21 , Sonia Twigg

There was a brief pause for a drinks break which came with a light show, not sure that will be what either side wanted, and especially England.

There will now be a change of pace with Kuldeep Yadav coming on to bowl. There were two runs from the over.

England 45-4 (13) Ali 4, Buttler 5, Siraj 0-21 (4) - need 185 to win

14:12 , Sonia Twigg

The batters have just stayed there for a bit and weathered the storm as best they can.

Three from the over, and that was the most England have managed for a while.

England 42-4 (12) Buttler 4, Ali 3, Shami 2-5 (4)

14:07 , Sonia Twigg

Shami has been unplayable as far as England have been concerned so far, and he will have another chance to add to his wicket tally here.

Ali hits upwards, but just short of mid off and he will pick up a single.

One run from that over.

England 41-4 (11) Buttler 4, Ali 2, Siraj 0-19 (3) - need 189 runs to win

14:03 , Sonia Twigg

Siraj has been brought back on to bowl at the end of the powerplay.

Just the one run from that over.

England 40-4 (10) Ali 1, Buttler 4, Shami 2-4 (3)

13:59 , Sonia Twigg

Moeen Ali defends and prevents a hat-trick.

He is off the mark with a dab down to third man. This has all gone wrong for England after their best bowling performance of the tournament.

Wicket! Bairstow out for 14! England 39-4

13:54 , Sonia Twigg

Shami is on another hat-trick here!

Bairstow has played on and there is another wicket! England just needed to weather this period and instead the wickets have tumbled.

England 39-3 (9) Bairstow 14, Buttler 4, Bumrah 2-16 (5) - need 192 runs to win

13:52 , Sonia Twigg

There has never been a better moment for Jos Buttler to find form. He has been completely out of nick in this tournament so far, but he remains one of the country’s greatest-ever white-ball players.

Bairstow has been dropped by Kohli! That has flown through, and hit the top of his hand.

Buttler has a boundary last ball of the over.

Wicket! Stokes out for 0! England 33-3

13:46 , Sonia Twigg

Shami is causing Stokes problems here, there’s another play and a miss.

England and Stokes are firmly on the back foot here, and it just looks like it’s becoming a case of survival.

That was a dreadful innings from Stokes! He has swung at that and swiped across the line, the ball nipped back into middle and leg stump.

England 33-2 (7) Bairstow 13, Stokes 0, Bumrah 2-11 (4)

13:41 , Sonia Twigg

Bumrah is on a hat-trick here after taking two in two with the last two balls of his previous over, and it was on target, but just a dot ball.

Bairstow is just hanging on here, but that is what England need. Someone has to dig in and know that the runs can come later, just absorb the pressure for a bit.

That was a maiden from Bumrah.

England 33-2 (6) Bairstow 13, Stokes 0, Shami 0-3 (1) need 197 runs to win

13:35 , Sonia Twigg

Bairstow has knocked the ball around well against Shami, a two off the first ball and a single off the next will bring Ben Stokes on strike for the first time in the match.

He just watches the first one as it moves outside the off stump.

Stokes has gone for a massive shot here and completely missed it. Stokes has missed another...this is suddenly all looking bad for England.

Wicket! Root out for a golden duck! England 30-2

13:30 , Sonia Twigg

That was an ideal over from Bumrah, he went for a boundary and re-adjusted came back and bowled one that Malan could only play on.

And he has another! England have reviewed but Root was struck on the pads first ball.

The crowd had been a bit quiet, but they have erupted here now! Root has reviewed it but that makes no difference. He got his footwork all wrong.

Root couldn’t get bat on that. Bumrah is on a hat-trick...

Wicket! Malan out for 16! England 30-1

13:26 , Sonia Twigg

Malan has another boundary and this time off Bumrah, he loves a cover drive.

He has waited, played it late and played with the swing.

The change of angle has worked for Bumrah and Malan has played on! He went for another cut square and it was just too close for him, cramped him for room and he has played on!

India have their first wicket.

England 24-0 (4) Bairstow 8, Malan 12, Siraj 0-16 (2)

13:22 , Sonia Twigg

Bairstow sends Siraj to the boundary for 4 from the first ball of his second over.

Siraj is just down looking at the strapping on his ankle.

Other than the four it was a tight over from the India bowler.

England 20-0 (3) Bairstow 4, Malan 12, Bumrah 0-7 (2) need 210 to win

13:15 , Sonia Twigg

Malan tries to flick one off his pads, but missed it and it has been called wide.

Bumrah is causing Malan all sorts of problems here. There is a two from the over, but this will be a challenge for the opening pair.

England 17-0 (2) Bairstow 4, Malan 10, Siraj 0-12 (1)

13:10 , Sonia Twigg

Siraj has started with a big wide...the third ball of the over is also called wide, it wasn’t as far away but still down the leg side.

One step and six! That was an unbelievable shot from Malan to open his account with a maximum.

It wasn’t a bad ball, but one step and bang!

He follows it up with a four next ball down the ground!

England 4-0 (1) Bairstow 4, Malan 0, Bumrah 0-4 (1) need 226 runs to win

13:05 , Sonia Twigg

Bumrah will start here for India. It’s a low total to defend but it’s not a straightforward wicket.

The main thing for England will be keeping wickets in hand, it has not been something they have managed well in any match this tournament so far.

One has gone through Bairstow, it has moved so much, completely carved up the batter, but has not caught an edge, despite Bumrah asking the question to the umpire.

Bairstow has a four the last ball of the over and England are up and running!

England to start chase of 230 to win

12:57 , Sonia Twigg

The second innings is about to get underway, Malan and Bairstow are walking out to the middle.

The sun has set, the lights are on, there is some dew around.

India score 229-9 from their 50 overs

12:52 , Sonia Twigg

Here is a first-innings report from Lucknow:

England produced their best bowling performance of the World Cup, restricting hosts India to 229 for nine in Lucknow.

Jos Buttler’s side headed into the match with nothing to lose, rock bottom in the standings after four defeats from five and with their semi-finals chances up in smoke, and finally put in a performance worthy of their reputation.

David Willey took three crucial wickets, including star man Virat Kohli for a nine-ball duck to silence a partisan 50,000 crowd, while Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes took two apiece.

India, who boast a 100% record after five games, relied on captain Rohit Sharma’s 87 and will need to bowl well under lights to retain their unblemished streak.

India score 229-9

12:35 , Sonia Twigg

It is hard to imagine that is the same England side who looked lost against South Africa and had no answers against Sri Lanka.

That was such an improvement it looked like a different team. Buttler showed his faith and the bowlers have responded, Willey and Woakes struck at the top of the innings and Rashid and Ali followed it up.

Chris Woakes said: “Nice to go well with the new ball. We got the ball in the right areas and challenged them well.

“It’s always good to get a decent spell at the start and put them under pressure early on.

“Uncharacteristically I felt like I missed my lengths earlier in the tournament and I’m my biggest critic.

“I think it (the wicket) took a bit of spin, maybe a little bit two-paced so we’ll obviously have to weather the difficult times but it might get a bit easier under lights.”

India 229-9 from their 50 overs Woakes 2-33 (9)

12:28 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes has continued to bowl well and closes out the innings with a solid over.

Bumrah and Kuldeep have not got going here.

There’s a run out from the final ball and England will have a chase of 230 to win.

Buttler put faith in his bowlers at the outset and they have responded.

India 225-8 (49) Bumrah 14, Kuldeep 8, Wood 1-46 (9)

12:23 , Sonia Twigg

The first two balls of Wood’s over have only gone for singles, and he bowls a wide third.

Five runs from the over, England will be happy with that.

India 220-8 (48) Bumrah 12, Kuldeep 6, Woakes 2-29 (8)

12:18 , Sonia Twigg

Bumrah has edged one off Woakes just short of Rashid at third on the ring.

Woakes is one of the most experienced bowlers at this stage in the game, and this has been a good start to his eighth over.

India are struggling to score here, and that’s ideal for England.

India 214-8 (47) Bumrah 7, Kuldeep 5, Willey 3-45 (10)

12:12 , Sonia Twigg

Willey has just struck at the right times in this match, first with the wicket of Kohli, then to break the partnership between Rohit and KL Rahul, and again to halt the flow of runs.

For the only player in the squad not awarded a central contract he has performed exceptionally today.

His final ball was a bit too straight and went for four, but his 10 overs were good.

Wicket! Yadav out for 49! India 208-8

12:09 , Sonia Twigg

Yadav has gone for a big hit into the off side, it goes up, and Woakes has safe hands! That will be a huge blow to India, as he was really trying to push on the scoring.

India 208-7 (46) Yadav 49, Bumrah 6, Wood 1-41 (8)

12:07 , Sonia Twigg

Yadav has smashed Wood into the stands for 6! He has pre-meditated that, and has flicked him over fine leg for six.

The extra pace has just seen that fly to the boundary and Yadav is closing in on a half century here, he can be so dangerous towards the end of the innings.

Yadav moved on to 49 with a strong cover drive to the boundary, Bumrah turned down a second run.

After 12 balls without a run, Bumrah is off the mark with a heave into the on side for four!

Bumrah has been dropped! Moeen Ali has dropped him! That looped up and looked to be quite a straightforward catch, but the England all-rounder has spilled it.

India 195-7 (45) Yadav 42, Bumrah 0, Willey 2-39 (9)

12:02 , Sonia Twigg

Willey is back on and Yadav has turned down a single, probably with those dots Bumrah faced in the back of his mind.

He then took it on the third ball of the over, I’m not sure that plan from India has worked.

Bumrah gets it away the final ball of the over, but Yadav turns down the run. A great over from Willey just one run from it.

India 194-7 (44) Yadav 41, Bumrah 0, Wood 1-28 (7)

11:57 , Sonia Twigg

When Bumrah is on strike the flow of runs just dries up, he has faced eight balls without scoring and it is really denting the total that India will want to put on here.

India 190-7 (43) Yadav 38, Bumrah 0, Rashid 0-35 (10)

11:50 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid will bowl his last over here, as England keep the pressure on India in the final few overs of this innings.

Yadav has another boundary - again with the sweep shot. He almost has another with one that went through Bumrah.

India 183-7 (42) Yadav 31, Bumrah, Wood 1-24 (6)

11:46 , Sonia Twigg

It was a good low catch from Buttler. England have bowled so much better in this match than they have at any other point in the tournament so far.

It might be too little too late in terms of having a hope of semi-final qualification, but it has restored some pride.

India do not have the best depth in the lower order if Bumrah is in at 9...

Wicket! Shami out for 1! india 183-7

11:43 , Sonia Twigg

Mark Wood will have a go at the new batter, and the change of pace might just work, although it can often lead to more boundaries due to the extra pace on the ball.

And he strikes immediately! Shami is out!

That ball at over 90mph just caught the bat on the way through to Buttler. England are turning the screw here.

India 183-6 (41) Yadav 31, Shami 1, Rashid 2-28 (9)

11:40 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid had been one of the few not to blame for the defeat to South Africa, and he has taken another crucial wicket here.

England are into the bowlers, and that will dent India’s run-scoring abilities in the final 10 overs here.

Wicket! Jadeja out for 8! India 182-6

11:37 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid has trapped Jadeja lbw! The umpire’s finger goes up...but India have reviewed the decision.

He has not hit the ball, but has it turned too much...almost! DRS showed the ball was just clipping the stumps but that will be enough, England and Rashid have another!

India 180-5 (40) Yadav 30, Jadeja 7, Ali 0-37 (8)

11:34 , Sonia Twigg

Ali will bowl his eighth. This is now setting up for an interesting contest because at some point India have to accelerate, but at five wickets down, they can’t afford to lose any more wickets before the final few overs.

They will be wanting to target 280 odd, while England will be hoping to restrict them to around 240.

A brief respite came from the final ball of the over, as Buttler missed one that just trickled to the boundary.

India 172-5 (39) Yadav 28, Jadeja 5, Rashid 1-25 (8)

11:31 , Sonia Twigg

Yadav goes for another sweep shot off Rashid and misses it and will have to wear that bruise!

Rashid bowls a very tight over. This has been so good from England, who were bottom of the standings before the match started.

India 171-5 (38) Yadav 27, Jadeja 5, Ali 0-33 (7)

11:28 , Sonia Twigg

England will want to keep the run rate down and the pressure on the incoming batters. One more wicket would bring an end to the last recognised batting partnership.

India 165-5 (37) Yadav 25, Jadeja 1, Rashid 1-24 (7)

11:23 , Sonia Twigg

In taking the catch, Livingstone took a chunk of the turf with him and is receiving treatment on his knee. His knee has been problematic before at the World Cup last year in Australia and forced him to leave after the first test of the tour of Pakistan last winter.

Rashid has the wicket England wanted, and at the perfect time.

Wicket! Rohit out for 87! India 164-5

11:21 , Sonia Twigg

Willey has done the job he was brought back to do, he got the wicket of KL Rahul, and Adil Rashid will come back for his seventh.

Rashid just floats one up and Rohit was drawn into the big shot towards deep midwicket, but he couldn’t quite get hold of it and Livingstone rushes in off the boundary to take a great diving catch!

That was just the wicket England needed.

India 163-4 (36) Rohit 87, Yadav 24, Ali 0-27 (6)

11:16 , Sonia Twigg

Jos Buttler appeals for an lbw shout as Rohit was struck on the pads, but it looked like he was outside the line.

And the sweep did come off with the last ball of the over for a boundary. Yadav is one of a few Indian players who plays the sweep shot, and he hits it perfectly.

India 155-4 (35) Rohit 85, Yadav, 18, Willey 2-38 (8)

11:12 , Sonia Twigg

Yadav has pulled Willey for four the first ball of this over, that’s a noise from the crowd who have been a bit quieter (although not quiet) since the wicket of KL Rahul.

He has been a bit more expensive this over, but the run rate has not got away from England at all this innings.

India 147-4 (34) Rphit 85, Yadav 10, Ali 0-19 (5)

11:07 , Sonia Twigg

Ali continues and Rohit goes for the big sweep, but that one just jumped off his foot and into his chin.

India 145-4 (33) Rohit 84, Yadav 9, Willey 2-30 (7)

11:04 , Sonia Twigg

A slightly concerning moment for England when Yadav hit a ball that went into Ben Stokes’ knee as he was fielding at mid on.

Willey will continue and there are four runs from the over.

India 141-4 (32) Rohit 82, Yadav 7, Ali 0-17(4)

11:00 , Sonia Twigg

Ali will continue from the other end. There is a long way left in this innings and if these two can put on a significant partnership, India will have wickets in hand to attack in the final 10 overs.

From an England perspective, even now they broke the key partnership of Rahul and Rohit, they cannot let up.

Four runs from that over

India 137-4 (31) Rohit 80, Yadav 5, Willey 2-26 (6)

10:56 , Sonia Twigg

A big ask for Yadav here to support Rohit.

He hits one in the air almost immediately, it’s just wide of Willey, and goes for a boundary.

Wicket! KL Rahul out for 39! India 131-4

10:51 , Sonia Twigg

England have made a change and have the breakthrough they so needed!

A bowling change has worked! David Willey has come back on and immediately the change of pace forced KL Rahul into an erorr.

He hit one high into the air and Jonny Bairstow took the catch.

India 131-3 (30) Rohit 79, KL Rahul 39 Ali 0-13 (3)

10:47 , Sonia Twigg

Rohit has unleashed another boundary and the crowd is just starting to get a bit louder.

Buttler goes up for a big lbw shout but Ali was not interested.

India 125-3 (29) Rohit 74, KL Rahul 38 Livingstone 0-29 (4)

10:44 , Sonia Twigg

Seven runs from that over from Livingstone, and it just feels like the momentum is shifting in favour of the home side.

Rohit always has that ability to take games away from you.

India 118-3 (28) Rohit 67, KL Rahul 38, Ali 0-7 (2)

10:40 , Sonia Twigg

The partnership is up to 76 runs. It’s just starting to feel like England need a breakthrough here.

That was a good over from Ali, just two runs from it.

India 116-3 (27) Rohit 66, KL Rahul 37, Livingstone 0-22 (3)

10:37 , Sonia Twigg

Livingstone will have a third and KL Rahul and Rohit have just taken a bit of a liking to him.

Rohit has perfectly executed a reverse sweep to notch up a boundary. And there’s another one, a bit of width and it’s cut away for four.

Another expensive over from Livingstone.

India 105-3 (26) Rohit 58, KL Rahul 34, Ali 0-5 (1)

10:33 , Sonia Twigg

Another new bowler, this time Moeen Ali will have a chance with ball in hand.

KL Rahul has passed a milestone of 2,500 runs for India in ODI cricket.

England have not as threatening since Chris Woakes has stopped bowling. But India have not started to attack with the firepower that anyone who has watched the tournament knows they have.

India 100-3 (25) Rohit 57, KL Rahul 30, Livingstone 0-11 (2)

10:29 , Sonia Twigg

That was the first sign of real turn! And it has caught the edge, but with no slip in place Rahul picks up a boundary, and follows it up with a sweep for four the next ball.

India’s spinners might be liking the look of this surface.

While the batters bring up the century and seem to take a liking to Livingstone. That was the most expensive over since the early one off Willey that went for 18.

India 89-3 (24) Rohit 57, KL Rahul 19, Wood 0-24 (5)

10:24 , Sonia Twigg

Sharma will be on strike here and just one run away from his half century. He has already batted for 106 minutes.

He brings it up with a big shot over the top, that he didn’t quite get hold of as it didn’t get to the boundary rope.

But the India captain has done what was required of him today, especially with the loss of early wickets.

The milestone seemed to ease some pressure, the next one is slightly leg side from Wood and flicked off his pads and over the boundary for a 73-metre six! That was a great shot!

India 81-3 (23) Rohit 49, KL Rahul 19, Livingstone 0-0 (1)

10:19 , Sonia Twigg

Liam Livingstone will come on to bowl for the first time in the game. He has found some turn already.

He starts with three dot balls to KL Rahul.

Willey is in pain after hitting his finger into the turf. That’s worrying for England, he bowled well early on in the innings.

Livingstone starts with a maiden.

India 80-3 (22) Rohit 49, KL Rahul 19, Wood 0-16 (4)

10:16 , Sonia Twigg

Rohit goes for a big pull shot and misses one that went straight through, a touch of worry from the crowd.

He moves on to 49 with a single, it does not look like the easiest surface to bat on but he has done well to hold this innings together here.

Three more runs to the total from that over.

India 78-3 (21) Rohit 48, KL Rahul 17, Rashid 0-22 (6)

10:11 , Sonia Twigg

Ahead of the 21st over, the partnership between Rohit and KL Rahul was up to 33. Brook and Sam Curran are on the field, Mark Wood has gone off, maybe to receive some treatment on that finger.

Rashid will continue, and Rohit has hit another boundary! He moves on to 48 and closing in on that half century, that also takes the India captain past 18,000 runs in international cricket for his country.

Five runs from the over.

India 73-3 (20) Rohit 44, KL Rahul 16, Wood 0-13 (3)

10:07 , Sonia Twigg

Wood goes down briefly after sticking out a hand to field the ball. There was a moment of concern, given what happened to Reece Topley against South Africa which resulted in a broken finger and saw him ruled out for the tournament.

India 70-3 (19) Rohit 43, KL Rahul 14 Rashid 0-17 (5)

10:01 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid has not been expensive here, and has bowled well. But has not come that close to taking a wicket so far.

KL Rahul chops one towards backward point.

Three runs from the over.

India 66-3 (18) Rohit 42, KL Rahul 12, Wood 0-10 (2)

09:58 , Sonia Twigg

KL Rahul has chased one outside off there and missed it, that will be encouraging for Mark Wood.

There is not a lot of pace in this wicket and the bounce has kept relatively low.

But just as that happened, Rahul has a boundary, the edge has gone fine and to the boundary, it is cheered by the crowd like it came off the middle of the bat.

India 62-3 (17) Rohit 42, KL Rahul 7, Rashid 0-14 (4)

09:54 , Sonia Twigg

Rohit has perfectly found the gap for another boundary, he is so important to this India innings now.

India will want to keep this partnership going as long as possible and try and put the pressure back on England.

India 51-3 (16) Rohit 37, Shreyas 5, Wood 0-5 (1)

09:46 , Sonia Twigg

The brilliant spell from Woakes has come to an end and England turn to Mark Wood for an injection of pace and something else for the batters to contend with.

Wood struck Rohit on the pad and he has been given out! The India captain reviews...there’s no bat involved.

But DRS shows the ball missing the stumps and that might be the biggest cheer from the India crowd all day.

The next ball following that reprieve, is smashed to the boundary for four and that brings the first drinks break.

India 50-3 (15) Rohit 33, KL Rahul 4, Rashid 0-7 (3)

09:39 , Sonia Twigg

India have 50 runs! The milestone came in the 15th over, and the crowd has definitely been subdued a bit here with England definitely on top.

Rashid will have his third, and just the one run from it.

India 49-3 (14) Rohit 33, KL Rahul 3, Woakes 2-23 (7)

09:36 , Sonia Twigg

Rohit has gone for another big hit! Haven’t seen any sign of that in the last few overs, but that one is smashed down the ground from the final ball of Woakes’s seventh over for 4.

Rohit is not going to dig in and take it slow.

India 42-3 (13) Rohit 28, KL Rahul 1, Rashid 0-6 (2)

09:32 , Sonia Twigg

Another tight over from Rashid...and will Woakes have another?

India 40-3 (12) Rohit 27, KL Rahul 0, Woakes 2-16 (6)

09:29 , Sonia Twigg

KL Rahul has been on good form so far this World Cup, but it has been a dream start for England, who have looked to remind everyone why they are defending double world champions.

It has been a significant improvement from the defeats to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

An excellent over from Woakes.

Wicket! Shreyas Iyer out for 4! India 40-3

09:26 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes has been exceptional and he almost had another, Shreyas Iyer wafts at one and again it falls just short of Joe Root at slip.

But he has another wicket! Shreyas has gone for a big shot, and that one was back of a length and just top-edged up and was a straightforward catch for Mark Wood.
