Instagram's function lets you remove followers

If you're looking for a guide on how to remove people as an Instagram follower, you've come to the right place.

Look, we get it. Negotiating social media can be a difficult thing at times. Whether you're having to mute family members because of their frequent status updates, blocking your boss from your Twitter feed, or avoiding any photos from your ex, it can feel like a bit of a minefield.

But Instagram's new function should hopefully help with any unwanted attention, after the platform introduced a new function to allow users to have more control over who looks at their profiles. As of 2018, Instagram introduced a 'remove follower' option, which allows you to choose who sees your posts in their newsfeed.

The new function differs from the existing 'block user' feature, because it allows for a bit more subtly - you're able to remove someone from your follower list, therefore meaning they won't see your Stories or photos in their timeline, in a slightly less aggressive way than blocking them all together.

In turn, if you have a private account, they will have to request to follow you again, which you can decline if you so wish. If you have a public account, you can hope that they don't even notice.

It's definitely different to the block in that unless someone is actively looking for your Stories in their list, or posts on their timeline, the likelihood of them actually noticing amongst the hundreds of other people they follow, is minimal.

To use the 'remove follower' function, go to your own profile page and tap followers. If you see three vertical dots to the right of a user's name, tap them, and you'll see the option to remove them from your follower list.

Also, to give you piece of mind, a window pops up when you're using the 'remove follower' function to assure you that the person won't be told you're doing it. Instagram also gives you the option to remove someone as a follower straight after you've unfollowed someone, should you wish to cut the ties altogether.
