Liverpool supporters will have been keeping an eye on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance for England against Denmark on Thursday night. He wasn’t the only Red on international duty that day, though, with the 2024 Copa America getting underway in Atlanta.

The tournament began with reigning World Cup champion Argentina taking on Canada. The South Americans unsurprisingly won, with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister in the heart of the action.

He even risked injury to collect an assist for the opening goal in his nation’s 2-0 win. Mac Allister was taken out by the goalkeeper but was still able to feed the ball to Julián Álvarez, with the Manchester City man poking it home. It was the highlight of an impressive performance from the Liverpool number 10, who drew plaudits from the media in his homeland and elsewhere after his efforts in the match.

It seems the Argentinian assessors were a little harsher than those in other countries though. According to TBR Football, Mac Allister was given a six out of 10 score by TyC Sports. “From smallest to largest. It took him a long time to get into the game. First, it was showy and then effective. Key to Julián’s goal,” was its verdict.

The former Brighton midfielder collected a rating of seven from Ole. Their man Hernán Claus wrote: “Key participation in the 1-0 due to his advance-assistance to Julián with the tip of the boot. He failed to head a cross-pass from De Paul with power like a number nine. He was judicious with his passes too.”

Mac Allister was the joint-most effective starter in the opinion of ESPN, who granted him an eight out of 10 for his performance. “Incredibly creative on the attack, consistently threatening Canadian players before finally breaking through on that first goal,” it said. “Excellent connection with Messi to inspire the goal.”

It was Goal that was arguably most effusive in its praise though with 'fantastic' Mac Allister lauded for 'putting his body on the line' for Alvarez's goal to cap an impressive performance.

Argentina is unsurprisingly favorite with the bookmakers to win the competition. Its credentials next come under scrutiny against Chile in East Rutherford on June 25. Mac Allister is likely to be key once again.

Liverpool.com says: These ratings won't be a surprise to Liverpool fans, who saw Mac Allister deliver seven or eight out of 10 performances almost every week for the Reds this season. Hopefully he can win the Copa America to receive a boost ahead of 2024/25.
