Investigation Launched: UFC Releases Statement on Anthony Johnson's Gym Incident

Why isn't Anthony Johnson Fighting Jon Jones at UFC 197?

UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson took to Facebook to rant about a gym incident he had with an anonymous female on Tuesday, and the UFC has hired an independent law firm to investigate the matter.

Johnson’s tirade began with, “To the ugly girl in the gym built like a bag of dog food, this is for you.”

The altercation apparently started because the unnamed female was doing yoga stretches on a mat in the weight lifting area.

“If you get in my way or any other athlete’s way again, I’ll throw your yoga mat across the gym AGAIN,” wrote the top-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender. “Who in their right mind stretches where ppl are supposed to lift?”

The woman involved ‘ran her mouth’ during the encounter, according to Johnson.

“Don’t ever run your mouth at me again. You won’t win that battle, I will,” Johnson commented.

The 31-year-old then repeatedly insulted the gym goer, targeting her physical appearance.

“You need more than stretching to help that beat up body,” he wrote. “One more thing, stop wearing sports bras when your tummy look like a old country red clay dirt road.”

Johnson has been accused of domestic violence in the past. He was suspended by the UFC in September 2014 after news surfaced that he was suspected of domestic violence against the mother of his two children. The case was eventually dismissed, and he was cleared to fight. But the allegations remained.

On Wednesday evening, UFC released a statement addressing the gym incident involving Johnson.

“UFC is aware of the situation involving Anthony Johnson. We take these matters seriously and have commenced a formal investigation by a third-party law firm. We will act accordingly once we gather more information,” read the press release.

The accuser threatened to take her story to social media, and Johnson initially scoffed at the warning.

“Run to the front desk again crying, talking about you feel threatened and gonna go to social media. I really don’t care! I’ve been through worse,” he wrote.

Hours later, Johnson apologized for his rant on his Facebook page.

“I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong and yesterday I was absolutely wrong. I shouldn't have gotten that upset from the start but I did, I mean I'm human. I said some pretty nasty things about a female from my gym while full of emotions( not a good idea) so I do wanna apologize to her for being rude as I was and not taking a break to relax after our argument,” he said.

“Sorry to everyone else too for having to witness me getting upset about a argument in the gym. I'm not going to sugarcoat it and make it seem like I'm a angel because I'm not but I will admit when I'm wrong,” Johnson added.
