Kolkata Knight Riders opener Shubman Gill feels his team is in contention to qualify for the playoffs of IPL 2021. Gill, who was ruled out of the England Test series after suffering a shin stress fracture in July, joined the team camp in UAE recently. Last month Gill was cleared to play for the franchise in the second phase of IPl after completing his rehabilitation programme at National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

Gill hasn’t made a great impact with the bat in IPL 2021, he made 132 runs from seven innings and is yet to register a fifty-plus score this season. Kolkata Knight Riders are placed at the second-last position of the points table with four points, having just won two matches so far.

I think KKR are very much in contention to finish in the top 4: Shubman Gill

The explosive opener feels that KKR will win their remaining games to book their berth in the knockout stage of the tournament.

“I think we are very much in contention to finish in the top 4. Whichever team qualifies, you never know what will happen,” Gill told KKR’s official website.

“Hopefully we will win the remaining matches, make sure we qualify and then we’ll see where we go from there.”

“If we keep doing what we have done in the past years and just enjoy our game, then is possible that we will do well or qualify,” he added.

At the start of August, Gill joined National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for his rehabilitation and he was made to work on an Alter-G machine – an anti-gravity treadmill that helps an individual to decrease his body weight while running on it.

“He (Shubman Gill) is not feeling pain. Gradually his workload will be increased – from slow jogging to running twice-thrice a week. We’re confident he will be fine by the IPL which is anyway a month away,” an informed source told Cricbuzz.

KKR will resume the tournament against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on September 20 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The last time the two teams met, RCB had won by 38 runs in Chennai.
