Shreyas Iyer is feeling to be “on top of the world” as he is all set to make his return to high-level cricket with the second half of the IPL 2021, which starts September 19, after missing the last 5 months due to injury. He sustained a dislocated shoulder while fielding during an ODI against England in March.

Shreyas Iyer then underwent surgery for the same and consequently missed the India leg of the IPL 2021 – Rishabh Pant was given the captaincy of the Delhi Capitals – and also the limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka.

The right-hander went to the UK for his surgery. After returning he trained at the National Cricket Academy before being given the green signal to play in the UAE leg of the season. He trained with the Delhi Capitals assistant coach, Pravin Amre, for a week before the team arrived in Dubai on August 21.

“I am feeling on top of the world, to be honest. This was the thing I was eagerly waiting for. It’s never a bad feeling to be among the team. I came six days prior to the start of the practice sessions for the team, and I had two good games against the UAE team, so I just want to continue with the same momentum,” he said in the Delhi Capitals release.

The feeling was very difficult to sit out: Shreyas Iyer

The 26-year-old talked about his journey through the injury and recovery process away from the field.

“The feeling was very difficult to sit out and see my teammates play. I was sitting in front of the TV, watching each and every game and feeling as if I am on the ground and trying to replicate the scenario at my place,” he added.

Now, however, Shreyas Iyer wants to focus on the present and what is coming in the next couple of months: the remainder of the IPL season, where he will be hoping to make a strong case for his place in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

“But, it’s in the past now, I have to forget about it and continue with the same flow, the team has maintained throughout,” the Mumbai batsman stated.

It also remains to be seen if the Capitals reinstate Shreyas Iyer as the captain after Pant had led the side brilliantly to the top of the table in the first half of the tournament.
